Forums - Sales - First day sales in Japan (7/23) - Punch-out, Dragon Ball (Wii), Katamari

it seems two games that i want are not doing very well.....

[WII] Dragon Ball: Tenkaichi Daibouken - 5,800
[PS3] Toro to Morimori - 2,800

It (PS3's market share) might hit 30%, but definently not more. ~ Neo

Still is boxing popular at all in Japan ?

Nope, Japan loves Sumo, Wrestling, MMAs and martial arts in general but boxing is way beloew those, actually few japaneses boxers leave the country because they're ranked very low. Filipinas on the other hand is the most prominent asian country in boxing (Pacquiao is some kind of national hero there)

Then that explains punch-out results.

i don't understand even with higher userbase.

third party and even core games sell better on ps3 better than wii.
PSP is understable.
but i expected punch out and dragon ball to do better than katamary.

That's becouse userbase is myth that cannot be estimated only on number of consoles sold.

And the more niche genre/game the less it matters.

Looking for example on jRPG:

best selling jrpg on ps3 is nowhere near 3 times more copies than best x360 jrpg

similarly if we take dragon quest spinoff on wii it's nowhere near outselling wkc 2,5 times and definitly nowhere near 8 times more sales than x360 jrpgs

So the hardcore jrpg fanbase could be for example 800k on wii, 600k on ps3, 500k on x360 due to past releases then any jrpg will strugle to break those numbers unless it has big universal appeal and well known name like Pokemon, FF XIII, DQ X

If you think about Wii which has broadest appeal and most diversed player base it means it will have similar sales in smaller niche games than platforms with less people.

Punch Out bombed badly as expected. It was fairly obvious it was going to bomb badly, more so after the Famitsu review. The Source listed Punch Out as a game that was going to help Wii, but it was obvious it wouldn't at all, since most of the Wii games have bombed recently and no one was anticipating it.

Dragon Ball also bombed, and also got a bad review. Anyways, Wii seems about dead regarding new games that aren't big sequels. No one is buying anything... With a userbase of more than 8 million, a 5k debut is atrocious. Next bomb is Ju-On, MH3 will sell decently but the boost will be unperdictable. Other games for other platforms doing badly too, but the Wii bombs are something that just keep on happening week after week.

I hope this ends with the release of MH3. And talking about MH3, the Black Wii bundles are in small limited quantities, they are not a permanent bundle, so the boost will be as big as the supplies, until they run out. Perhaps the game itself will lift sales a bit, but the bundle, once it's over... it's over.

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.

Only 3k for Punch Out? >.

Punch Out isn't doing so well because it's missing Mike Tyson.

The firxt Punch Out did 450k in Japan, this are bad sales, regardless or not a retired US boxer is in the game. I think Nintendo isn't creating that kind of feeling they had with their games anymore, at least in Japan. I remember most of their games in the GC were successful. As of late even if the game is first party, it won't matter. We've seen too many bad performing 1st party games in Japan. If they are not worried I don't know what to think.
