Forums - Gaming - wii graphics

before i start everything i have played in this thread has been on the same tv, 32" HDTV. now ive got that out the way............

I played the conduit today for the first time and was horrified by the amount of jagged edges in the game, it blinded me to anything that might have looked good about the game.

Now some of you might ask why be bothered about wii graphics? well the answer is simple, i want them to look as good as they should do. isnt the wii a gamecube on steroids and on par with the xbox if not slightly better? if so why doesnt its games show that! i dont remember the last gen having as much jagged edges as this but instead of relying on my nostalgic memory i thought id check some out.

i was surprised to find out a lot of my old games fared much better than even i expected. even tomb raider legend on the gamecube didnt have as many as the conduit. speaking of bad looking wii games, no more heroes really suffered with them. in that game what should have appeared to be a straight line looked like a set of stairs.

the killer blow for me however was super mario sunshine. how can a game made in 2002 not suffer from jagged edges yet galaxy, one of 2007's GOTY does? even luigis mansion is better for it.

im not a wii hater, one look at my collection should prove that and im not expecting 360 quality graphics on my wii. all i want to know is why wii games dont look as good as they should do?

Xbox games dont look that good either.. these are machines that werent built for HD resolution, you arent going to get a very pretty picture from them.

Most PAL Gamecube games don't support progressive scan, which offers a sharper image. Most Wii games (all regions) do.

Seeing as you haven't mentioned how you set up your consoles, I'll have to assume that this is why.

WHERE IS MY KORORINPA 3

Change your display setting to 576i... or 480i or whatever... just try one of the other two options.

The "jaggies" issue you mention is aliasing. Most games nowadays use an "anti-aliasing" process to minimize the jaggy issue you are refering to.

according to wikipedia: "In digital signal processing, anti-aliasing is the technique of minimizing the distortion artifacts known as aliasing when representing a high-resolution signal at a lower resolution."

Quantum of Solace and Conduit have the most aliasing issues of the FPS games on the Wii. COD WAW Wii has aliasing but it is not as severe. This could be due to a few factors:

1. Developers have not implemented an anti-aliasing technique.
2. Developers have implemented it but it isn't enough.
3. The monitor you are viewing it on is not interpolating the signal properly.

Not sure exactly why some Wii games have this issue, but I do know that Anti-aliasing can be taxing on the console.

My TV does a poor job of upscalling from 480p to 720p and creates a lot of jaggies. I have to run my Wii in 480i or it looks horrible. GC rarely supported 480p, so maybe your TV also does a poor job of upscalling 4080p.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

my wii is connected via component cables and the gc games i played were through my wii.

i also have a ps3 and 360 which are connected via hdmi. i just booted up halo 1 and that looks much better imo than the conduit, at least as far as jagged edges go.

The scaler in the Wii is poor.
All Wii games I've played on my HDTV have jaggies. I don't know if there's anything I can do about but at least I've come to accept it.

What annoys me is when SMS came out there was lots of ads for it on TV and watching them in HD on C4HD it looked amazing. When I played it I was really disappointed. Jaggies everywhere. Now I doubt they had a special HD version of the game made just for the advert so if it can look awesome with a decent upscaler it annoys me they couldn't put one in the Wii.
I'd have payed more for that.

Lord Flashheart: The Wii doesn't have a scaler. Your TV is scaling the 480p / 480i / 576i image which the Wii outputs.

PAL GameCube games don't run in 480p though.... as Gnac said, a 480p image is sharper, which means more noticable jaggies.
X360 I think upscales old Xbox games, so it will have fewer jaggies.

Wii games do run in 480p if you have set it up to do so.... try going into Wii settings and into "screen" and one of the options should be about the display mode.
