I was thinking there must be more then one type of fanboy. Not just ones that side with SONY, MS, or NINTENDO...

I broke it down into 4 types of gaming faboyism:

Developer Fanboy: Growing up on Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo means I'll buy anything Blizzard makes. Regardless of reviews or cost... same with ID software ( Also Bioware, and newly formed for Visceral Studios)

Genre Fanboy: RPGs... I've played bad RPGs over good titles in other genres just because it's an RPG (Runner up is classic PC adventure games like King's Quest, or Tex Murphy but they don't make games like that anymore)

Theme Fanboy: If it's related to fantasy, i.e. there's a mage or some dragons in it I'll buy it.

Corporate Fanboy: I guess I'm defaulted to SONY, since the only non-handheld console I own is a PS3.

From a reasoned Fanboy.

Taking a conversation I had over a few beers. The opponent in this sparring match a dedicated Sony Fanboy. Whereas he spouted rhetoric for the majority of the evening I think it convinces me of the existence of another Fanboy, the Die Hard, cut my nose to spite myself fanboy.

The cut my nose to spite my face is the least reasonable fanboy category convinced of their own superiority and unable to listen to any argument no matter how reasonable. They will always use outdated information in an attempt to hammer home an argument.

It is fair to say although the example above was of a Sony "cut my nose to spite my face" Fanboy they exist in all platforms.

The easiest way to spot one is to give them a competing console and watch their face scrunch up in disgust before placing said item in the bin.

The first three, plus a mild corporate fanboy...

-Atlus, Namco (especially the Tekken team and Tales Studios), Sony Computer Entertainment (including all of their 1st and 2nd party devs... especially Insomniac and Polyphony Digital), and From Software are some of the companies I love most. I'll buy almost all of their games.. because almost all are kickass.

-I love me some JRPG's. It's the only genre I'll put hundreds of hours in and am willing to pay $100+ for its games...

-I love me some urban and technolgical themes... I tend to enjoy these games more.

-Out of the console makers, I prefer Sony in home consoles and Nintendo in handhelds over the others...
