So the PS3 now has it's own 'core' unit then? I'm interested to see how this pans out. Price vs BC, which will win? Dun dun dunnnnnn. Still, I find that rather interesting if they can actually release a firmware update and add the compatibility back at a later time. Actually, I'd laugh really hard if soon after the 40gig launches they add it back because people complain. I'm sure they'd say something like "Hah, just kidding. . . we just wanted to make sure that the compatibility was high enough to make it acceptable for release without delaying the system itself."

I don't think that the lack of ps2 BC will have much effect on sales of the 40GB. Most people that want a ps3 neither know nor care about it's BC status. Just look at this conversation from this other thread here on this site:

i think this is a bad idea for sony another sku? like we dont have the 4 different xbox to choose from already now there is gonna be 3 ps3's? and sony and MS wonders why ninty is smokin them in sales. one sku one price everything nice.
