Forums - Gaming - Why when talking JRPG we forget about pokemon?

How many games and how many creatures does it have these days? I used to have a game on my gameboy color about 8-10 years ago. I grew out of the fad when it was still fresh.

Oh! and there is something seriously wrong with trapping animals in small balls and then unleashing them in a mortal kombat against other animal. xD

Because unlike most JRPG's, it's boring. Very very very boring. And lacks a story too.

pokemons japanese???!!!!!!
-revelation-

"They will know heghan belongs to the helghast"

"England expects that everyman will do his duty"

"we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender"

Isnt Pokemon a pet game?

In the same genre as say... Petz?

I love taking the time to level them up. Sure, the stories aren't that great, but what other game has a cast THIS size?

Ask stefl1504 for a sig, even if you don't need one.

jrpgs generally have a strong focus on story, which is why games like Pokémon, Monster Hunter or Demon's Souls imo kinda don't seem to fit into that genre

What makes you think it's in the same genre as petz!?

The definition of role playing games is undergoing an evolution at the moment. The reality is that so many games incorporate its facets that were not specifically designed as role playing games. Thus the definition has seemingly incorporated bulk. You need to have a certain amount of the common elements, specifically a high degree of leveling depth, and a higher degree of complexity.

Pokemon might meet the letter of the definition, but the definition is crude, and thus the definition is being refined and subdivided. Most gamers do not feel that Pokemon qualifies as a role playing game, and to be honest if adventure games are now having a more complex leveling aspect then Pokemon. Then Pokemon cannot possibly be a role playing game.

The same thing happened with Zelda it took a number of years before it became widely accepted that it was not a role playing game. Far too much action for far too little character building. The series needs its own genre, because it is too different now. Rock, Paper, Scissors, and three levels. Well it just doesn't have the depth to qualify. You need to find or create a new genre to place it in.

I do not consider it a role playing game. That is just insulting in my opinion.
