Ummm remember last generation didn't SmashBros:Melee kick Mario's butt even by less then a mill thats a huge accomplishment. What makes you think that the Wii who is gathering former fans of Sega's platforms (Began on GameCube) won't see far greater Brawl success then Galaxy.
Honestly while I think Galaxy has a chance of becoming a very big seller this fall I doubt it will over take Brawl day one or even over its entire lifespan. Brawl is one of the few online games being released on the Wii this year and that alone will give it an edge. Galaxy also seems to be an unconventional Mario game which inturn makes it a loose cannon. The unconventional innovative style of gameplay may not appeal to as many of theestablished base while Brawl is remaining completely true to its roots. Will innovation (Mario:Galaxy) or familiarity(Brawl) wi.
Also keep in mind that both Snake and Sonic are expected to be in Brawl one of them already confirmed. These two characters are to be joined by a third , Nintendo stated about 3- third party characters would be playable. They will inturn attract gamers who may have passed by Brawl. Sega fans for example will be inclined to take the fight to the litteral level pitting Sonic against Mario. This will give Brawl a bulstered position in the industry.
Also release right before Christmas can't possibly be seen as a downer. Where as Mario is recieving a release about a month in advance. The last minute Christmas rush and the fact that kids will not have Brawl likely before Christmas increases the chances of it being bought as a gift exponentially. In the end that alone will bulster its day one sales opposed to Mario's.
I think that Brawl will be far more successful then Mario:galaxy what do you think?

SSBM:Brawl should have a great launch in Japan and U.S.A, with enough publicity they should be able to notch better sales in E.U. So yeah World Wide Brawl has a chance to beat Halo 3's record for copies sold . But $ on $ Halo 3 is going to be difficult to beat. With 3 sku's @ Halo 3 - 60$, Limited Edition 70$ and Legendary Edition - 130$.
Tradtionally Smash Brothers titles start slow but they have very strong legs and manage to stay in the charts formonths if not years after thier release.
Heeeeyyyy!!!! <Snap>
I think Halo 3's opening week numbers are safe for the rest of this generation. It's possible that something will generate that much hype in the next few years but perfect storms (combined with massive advertising dollars) don't come around that often.
SSBB might outsell it lifetime though. It's hard to know what the Wii demographic looks like right now with the influx of traditionally non-gaming people buying it in huge numbers. They could be drawn in to it and it might crack 10m or it could just do marginally better than Melee.

Personally I have been dissapointed all around with the advertising for all Wii games, 1st party included. Somewhere I once read that nintendo was happy with how their games sold and didn't want to overshadow the 3rd parties further by having huge ad campaigns. That siad here is my guess
Brawl 1 Week = 50% Halo 3 1 Week
Brawl 1 Month = Halo 3 1 Week
Brawl 6 Months = Halo 3 3 months
Brawl 1 Year = Halo 3 1 Year
For the record I say Mario Kart will have the highest sales (exempting wii sports/play) of any game on the Wii, beating Galaxy and Brawl. Smash will have the highest debut of a wii game as it lands in december.
Final* Word on Game Delays:
The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.
Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.
Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.
*naznatips is exempt
It's kind of funny. Super Smash Bros. was outsold by Halo: Combat Evolved, and Melee was outsold by Halo 2. Halo 3 has a massive and tight knit community, after only a short while. Even I'm finding myself hooked.
The most optimistic prediction I can give for both games is somewhere around this:
Brawl: 8.5 million
Halo 3: 10.8 million
Both games have a devoted userbase, so I don't see why most people think the trend will change and all of a sudden a whole new audience will embrace Brawl. Melee was a launch game and largely thought of as the best game on the Gamecube. Brawl will be launching only a month after Super Mario Galaxy, and god only knows what other crazy games will be offered this Christmas.
