Answering a question at a UFC 100 fan event, one of the owners of the MMA league spoke about the sales success of UFC Undisputed: 2009, putting the unit sales at a cool three million.
Before he got to the sales data, he took the opportunity to take a jab at Electronic Arts for their miscalculation of the UFC brand.
“When we had the opportunity to go out and build a video game who do you think the first people we called was? EA Sports… We sat in the room with them and I would have cut a worse deal just to be with EA Sports. I wanted them so bad. They looked at them and they told us they didn’t think MMA was a sport. This was three years ago. They said the UFC was irrelevant and that we were wasting their time,” Fertitta said, as reported by Seeking Alpha.
Instead of being discouraged, Fertitta took his case to THQ, the current holders of the UFC license.
“So we went down the street and did a deal with THQ and they thought MMA was a sport. So we stick with the guys who stick with us. Now the UFC video game has been a massive success with three million copies sold. And guess what EA wants to do? They want to do an MMA game now.”
I’m sure Fertitta feels vindicated, though the UFC’s tactics to try to sink EA’s game at the detriment of their athletes seems a little dirtbaggy to me. Nonetheless, it’s good to see a game like UFC Undisputed do well — it’s obvious that great care was put into making an extremely fun, authentic video game representation of the UFC, and everyone involved deserves to get rewarded for that.
This site has about 2 million sales, so it's under tracked by about a million
