Forums - Sony - Sony dismisses Activision threats

It would just mean more sales for PS3 exclusives anyways. I dont like Activision games either.

I could care less, Activision doesn't make anything good anyways.

Blizzard does.

The Halo francise is the most overrated bland game to ever hit the console market. It provides a bad name to all FPS that even showed effort at creating an original entertaining plot.

I probably have more ps3 games than you :/

Nope not the case. By reducing its overhead by reducing support for the PS3 they can increase profitability on the remaining areas of the business. The threat is aimed at future support not current so games like Modern Warfare 2 would be unaffected but 3 may be in question.

The only thing in my mind that makes this empty is the fact that Sony will likely be forced to make a price cut regardless of what Activision or others say. The problem Sony have is third parties attempting to dictate its business model which I read as a sign of weakness.

Next time you're going to be weeks late to the punch, STAGE, at least don't give your OP such a distasteful anti-Sony spin.

Activision are obviously bluffing, and Sony are well within the rights of etiquette to resist being strong-armed.

They would not cut their profits by nearly as much as you might think. If they did drop development for the PS3, Activision would save on development costs, staff costs, licensing fees, publishing costs, marketing costs...hell even stationary costs, ulility costs etc. etc.  We would never know but I think the cost to Activisions bottom line wouldn't not be MASSIVE unless their PS3 games are making them a fortune in  !profit! They would also reduce their overall risk as -potentially- developming a game for the PS3 may be seen as carrying more risk than Wii or x360 games.  Investors/Bankers/Venture Capitalists etc are usually much happier with this.

It's quite obvisously saber rattling but things like this are better said in Sony's case behind closed doors and not in the public.

Activision WILL NOT stop supporting Sony. The Call of Duty series is a huge success on PS3. They would be losing MILLIONS profit if they cut out on that. Guitar Hero series is really big still on PS2, and is big on PS3. Again, Activision would be losing millions profit if they stopped making games for them.

If I am anti-Sony then Kotaku.com are anti-Sony as well as they share a common concern for the situation. You don't have concern, you have blind faith.

When you open a thread by saying a company [Sony] must "think real highly of themselves", you're accusing them of arrogance - an entirely unfair and illegitimate observation in this situation with Activision.

It's an empty threat. Activision wants more money but their ps3 ports are just too profitable to cut off. Ps3 is part of their "highest grossing" formula so it just can't be dropped.

Yes....a multi-billion dollar publisher making empty threats. I love it. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

It's an attempt to put pressure on Sony to cut the price of their machine, which would lead to more HD consoles on the market and a larger potential customer base for HD Activizion games.

It's in their interest for a PS3 price cut to occur, and as such, Bobby Kotick is using his position to try and persuade Sony to play their hand.

What you might see, in the worst possible situation, is Activizion cutting down on the amount of games appearing on the PS3. Their bread and butter staples like Guitar Hero and COD will not be going anywhere though.

Lurker said:Sony wouldn't be laughing if they did pull support. Those COD players would go and get a 360

This whole threat is made in the interest of making money. Activizion will not throw away millions of potential sales.

Activision threatened Sony because of lowering attach rates.

Still I do not see Activision passing or either of Guitar Hero or COD for the PS3. I do see less ports of lower end games and no exclusives thou.

"that absolute worst-case scenario, that would mean no Call of Duty for Sony consoles. No Guitar Hero for Sony consoles. No Tony Hawk, either. It probably won't ever come to that, of course, but Kotick's words are still worth noting. After all, when was the last time you ever saw a third-party publisher so openly threaten a major platform holder?"- Luke Plunkett, Kotaku.com

Activision is the worlds largest active third party publisher. I ask again.....do you believe they wont cut off everything in a worst case scenario? I agree that this is a frightening sight, but Sony dug themselves a hole here and they better fix it....and fix it fast.

Yup.

They simply wont pass up millions of extra sales, and the potential weakening of the franchises as a result.
