Forums - Sony - Sony dismisses Activision threats

Gamespot also are pretty late (shock!)

Yeah.. VGVharts was very late with this story. This was posted almost 3 weeks ago originally. If Activision pulled support (which I doubt they will), Sony would lose one of their best 3rd party supports. Think about what Activision brings to PS3? CoD, Modern Warfare 2, Guitar Hero, Quake, Spiderman, X-Men, Tony Hawk, Bond 007, etc... A lot of these games sell millions. That's millions of $$$ not going into Sony's pockets. Still if Activision does pull support, I think they'll just stop making their low end games like Crash, Spyro, Shrek, Transformers, etc.. for the PS3. They won't stop games like CoD or Guitar Hero. That would be suicide.

It's not thinking highly of themselves, Sony can just see the empty threat for what it is.

Yes....a multi-billion dollar publisher making empty threats. I love it. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Calm down..

If they wanted to leave they would have left already, it IS an empty threat, you don't see other publishers that do multi-platform games complaining about PS3's price.

It's an attempt to put pressure on Sony to cut the price of their machine, which would lead to more HD consoles on the market and a larger potential customer base for HD Activizion games.

It's in their interest for a PS3 price cut to occur, and as such, Bobby Kotick is using his position to try and persuade Sony to play their hand.

What you might see, in the worst possible situation, is Activizion cutting down on the amount of games appearing on the PS3. Their bread and butter staples like Guitar Hero and COD will not be going anywhere though.

This whole threat is made in the interest of making money. Activizion will not throw away millions of potential sales.

Exactly. The PS3 would not only lose the COD franchise (The most promising shooter on the PS3), but Guitar Hero (and it's not like the Rockstar devs give a damn about Sony anyway) and Tony Hawk. Not to mention, the fact that Activision is the main publisher that Hollywood uses to create movie adaptations of videogames. If Activision leaves Sony...it might inspire a whole bunch of devs to leave Sony as well.

"If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony….When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console--and the PSP."-Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick.

There is your timeframe. Next year is not that far. Even if you think it is an empty threat, this has got to have you thinking.

Activision threatened Sony because of lowering attach rates and they are expecting them to lower even more. Those people are a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, whom make WOW. Do you think they are afraid of losing something?

Still I do not see Activision passing or either of Guitar Hero or COD for the PS3. I do see less ports of lower end games and no exclusives thou.

Activision will at least do what every other editor did : apply yet more budgets on the 360.

In the end the Xbox will surpass Playstation as a brand, hell, the 360 might even reach tipping point this Xmas and leave Sony crying.

"that absolute worst-case scenario, that would mean no Call of Duty for Sony consoles. No Guitar Hero for Sony consoles. No Tony Hawk, either. It probably won't ever come to that, of course, but Kotick's words are still worth noting. After all, when was the last time you ever saw a third-party publisher so openly threaten a major platform holder?"- Luke Plunkett, Kotaku.com

Activision is the worlds largest active third party publisher. I ask again.....do you believe they wont cut off everything in a worst case scenario? I agree that this is a frightening sight, but Sony dug themselves a hole here and they better fix it....and fix it fast.

activision would at least cut their profits by one third if they did this. if i was the ceo of activision i think i would be fired for such a decision.

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

Consoles owned: Game Cube, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, PSP, PS1, PS2, PS3.

My prediction: NATAL WILL NOT help 360 sales. Maybe a 50-100k boost week 1, then a 30-70 k boost week 2, and back to the norm again after 3-5 weeks.
