I know exactly what makes a core game. and, teacher? I am an electrical engineer, I no longer go to school. This is a technical paper I am doing out of interest, it is nothing but numbers from tracker sites, I leave the opinion up to the viewer of the data.

out of the top 50 ds games, there are 5 non casual games.

That might be a little hard for some people to swallow.

I love how we just jumped from talking about "core games" to "casual/non-casual games."  Even worse, I don't think digitalentourage even realizes the difference.

Tell us digitalentourage, what 5 games are those?

^Do people even suggest that there could be more accurate approximations of gamer audience than this overgeneralized "hardcore vs casual" stuff? It's nice scheme, easy to understand, but useless on more in-depth analysis. Simple rule - the more generalization you got the more you lose in details. It should be ok for forum talk though. Anyways Internet always win against common sense, so I shouldn't even bother.

He's right to say Brawl was created as a party game....because it is. Nintendo creates games to appeal to all, rather than a core audience (Even though they can make the game competitive themselves). Seriously....onto bigger things though man. We're talking about the DS here and what it is doing right that the PSP isn't.

I agree. We did jump from one area to another, but someone jumped on digital for one small part of his post, which was mostly on topic. I say we give the guy a fair shake to respond with evidence and then we leave that aspect alone. The main topic at hand is a Sony problem and not really a Nintendo problem.

It doesn't appeal to women? That's the reason you came up with? I think we would have settled for "it's 50 million sales behind".

I wasn't referring to his post.

@STAGE : What is the 'problem' for Sony ? Selling only 50 million consoles ? Last time I checked, MS sold less than 30 million 360 consoles, is it a problem ?

PSP is very profitable for Sony if I remember correctly.

So yeah, they need more rythm games, ads and doctor Kawajimago games, then my nephews will buy one. Does Sony want to target this market ? Probably not, at least that's definitely not their priority. Even looking once at the PSP you see it's aimed at a different target than the DS. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Then again, the DS crowd includes some hardcore gamers too, while the PSP crowd includes nearly no casual gamers.

Thats quite obvious. However, Sony does seem to have a major problem with attracting females that aren't into core games, which are the majority. These types of women are helping to raise the sales of the DS and the Wii to stellar heights. There will be record numbers for the Wii at the end of its life cycle.

You're comparing a portable with a full-on console. If Microsoft makes a portable, then you can go on about how its portable isn't selling. If Sony didn't want the female audience, they wouldn't create the Hanna Montana PSP bundle. Sony is like that alpha male with no clue how to be sensitive. Microsoft is showing signs of getting the picture with their console, but hasn't hit the spot. The only thing's they've done to pique casual's curiosity that has semi-succeeded was the creation of Natal, which is all over the mainstream American media and Natal. If you want to know where Sony wants to go with the PSP, pay close attention to E3. They are less satisfied with the PSP's sales than the PS3's (Which is weird).

It wasn't a priority... but next month they're releasing a Hanny Montana PSP, complete with design and game bundle.

yeah, they DO target somehow the casual gamer market, but it's not at all their priority, with games like MGS, GOW, GTA...

For one casual game they release on PSP, they release maybe 5 core games, it's the opposite in DS releases.

If casual gamer was their priority, the console would be priced cheaper and you'd see tons of hannah montana / quiz / doctor kawajimago games every month. Clearly, that's not what we see.

Their next target is more the Apple Iphone crowd actually, with the PSP Go. For me it worked, since I'll buy one when it's released. ;)
