The photo gallery is a weird feature but it is used however it still feels kinda detached from the site.

I think adding a simple comments to the photo gallery would be neat and I dont think it would be too hard to implement.

Good idea, OP! And it looks like ioi agrees. Hope the comments section (and the user videos, too) gets added soon. Maybe I'll be inspired to add some.
