Dragon Quest IX about to take the gaming world by storm in Japan. Every time a new Dragon Quest title is released in Japan, it’s treated like a national holiday. It should come as no surprise that Dragon Quest IX for the DS, which has a massive install base, will be treated any differently.

In today’s Nikkei Industrial Paper, the paper reports that the game has passed the two million preorder mark for retailers. Dragon Quest titles have the tendency of selling several million copies during the first of sales. Dragon Quest IX will release this Saturday along with a new red DSi.
 
I think we know what the top selling game of July will be in Japan.

The biggest week one opening for a cartridge-based game ever is like 1.6m...

Dragon Quest IX will destroy that record. Should be the biggest opening on a Nintendo system ever in Japan actually.

I'm kind of pissed about my prediction league guess...it reads 2m but I could have sworn I hit '3' not '2' as the first number.

2,000,000 week one is gonna be as much as 50% too low.

Meh. Where are the good sales of the good old times when home consoles ruled supreme? They all probably sold more than 3 million first day.

I believe Final Fantasy VIII on the PS2 has the biggest first week of just under 2.6 million on the original Playstation.  I'm not entirely definite on that but I believe that was it.

DQIX definitely has a chance but it will be only 2 days instead of the usual 3 so I don't know how much that will affect it for at least first week numbers.

Lovely at how crazy japan is about dragon quest, it are great games indeed but sales like this are just crazy. Also what do you guys think about ds sales?
