You seem to consider present VGC numbers as absolute truth and disregard the fact retailers tend to notice channel stuffing and force suppliers to sell the overstocked product under more favorable circumstances. If that was the case, we would be seeing tons of PS3 promotions and bundles due to retailers willing to sell the product they acquired at a lower price. Consider also the ammount of media exposure PS3 gets. Leaked news would be everywhere regarding Sony market practices.
These adjustments seems to be made based solely on Nintendo sales report with a bit of GFK thrown in the bit for good measure. Numbers of Europe, Africa and Asia adjusted adjusted over a single company report over european sales. It is impossible for Sony to have shipped 2m consoles just to stand still at suppliers and nobody to have noticed.
200k is not massive.

That's a huge adjustment, Wii has been getting a lot of downwards adjustments this year, but so did the PS3, so the HD/Wii gap didnt increase at all.
Still, it's a very bad situation YoY for the Wii, 2 million down from 2008 so far.

Thats why I'm starting to believe that rumor of a Nintendo price cut this year. Cause i think even if they were to release new colors, or with WSR, with the uncertain global economy, you have to get down to a mass market price point.
*edit* The one thing I can say is that the software sales, bear out that a price cut, can be profitable, another reason why I think they may do one. The chance to DOUBLE the already impressive software sales of the Wii is too enticing...
