Forums - Gaming - Do some games get higher scores simply because of their name?

I believe it.

I don't think it is entirely intentional though. Fond memories of Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario 64 are going to color your reviews of the sequels. Let's not forget Famousringo's sig either:

"The worst part about these reviews is they are [subjective]--and their scores often depend on how drunk you got the media at a Street Fighter event."

Well TC since you've mentioned Resident Evil 5, if the name is the reason for that game getting good reviews why didn't it work for Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil Survivor, Resident Evil Outbreak, etc?

Halo 3 and GTA4 say yes.

Yeah, TC isn't even a big name and look what happened with Gamepro. If they would give a game like super mario galaxy 2 an 80 for example... Well, I wouldn't want to be that reviewer tbh.

The uproar was not about the score.  It was about the content of the review.

I know that, but if they gave SMG an 80% it would cause an uproar, trust me :)

What makes you think it didn't work?  The reviews might have been even worse if it wasn't for the Resident Evil name.

Halo Wars had 69 reviews.  It only got two 65% scores.  It had thirteen 90% scores.  It had twenty 80% scorse.  It's average score was a 81.60%.

You are just wrong on that.

All of Nintendo's first party games to be honest(only the good ones). Not by a lot of points, but a little... Just look at all those 100% scores SMG got... No matter how great a game is, it will never be perfect as it has its flaws. The average score on metacritic is about right for the game though.

The other side of that coin, though, is The Thousand Year Door, a game that got so ridiculously under-reviewed that it makes my head hurt to think about it.  I'm sure there are other examples of Nintendo 1st party games getting unneccessarily savaged, but that one is the most egregious.

True, true, I haven't played the thousand years door though, but I've heared a lot of good things about it. But one I say over rated then I only mean a little bit as most games they make deserve to be AAA games(90% on metacritic if you will)
