Here just some comparisions between some wii games on amazon.de (A) and play.com (P), I made two weeks ago. But remember, that this UK-based store isn't giving a direct exchange rate. They include higher shipment costs in the Euro price there.

Need for Speed Undercover A: 44,95 € P:19,49  €

Rayman's Raving Rabbids TV  Party A: 36,95 € P: 19,49 €

Sim City Creator A:33,99 € P: 15,49€

FIFA 09 A:49,95 € P:23,49 €

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games A: 39,99 € P: 23,49 €

 

But remember, that this UK-based store isn't giving a direct exchange rate. They include higher shipment costs in the Euro price there. So given you would really get your games for the exchange-rate of 1 Euro= 1,17 GBP

It looks even better for importing.

Ghostbusters PS3 A: 64,95 Euro P:39,99 GBP = 46 Euro or 51 Euro they want with their "special" exchange rate.

Prototype PS3: A:59,95 Euro P:P:39,99 GBP = 46 Euro or 51 Euro they want with their "special" exchange rate.

Virtua Tennis Wii: A: 45,95 Euro P:29,99 GBP = 35 Euro or 38,99 Euro (again their "special")

 

But the key to the price difference is, that the prices in the UK drop way faster than in Germany. That's what I was referring to, when I said, that the price could sometimes easily be half of it. It's hard to find a wii game i.e. anywhere below 20 Euro, while it's easier in the UK.


So it seems when the games get a few months old, thats the perfect window of opportunity to buy your games from the UK and get half price.

Dont the German custom catch you though? That they open the packages and add VAT lol.

They haven't yet. But it's just if it is over 22 Euro. But doesn't a game look like a dvd anyway^^

Even if they would catch me, even 19% more would still in most cases be a bargain. If they would ship from the UK, it would just make a VAT-difference of 4 %.

I was quoting the "Global Markets Report" from NPD/GFK/Media Create which goes by dollar figures. Hardware and software if far more expensive in the UK than Japan, so if you go by that standard, the UK became a larger market than Japan last year. Both around $6 billion I believe.

I thought that imports went untaxed because UK and Germany are both EU members.

Generally speaking yes, but the UK has some free trade areas like the channel islands and this very company is located there. Also sometimes you have to pay the 4% VAT difference, because a company like amazon sends there amazon.co.uk ordered games from Germany but with UK prices.

Another good time to buy a game is release week.
I got Streetfighter 4 for £30 release day from ASDA.

In the build up to the hols release games can be £25.
Retailers including online only go into a price war.

You can pre-order Dead rising 2 now for £27. Ok that's from a supermarket and the supermarkets are now the best place to get games cheap on release.

I don't know how people from mainland europe could take advantage of the supermarkets bargins.

japan might sell more hand helds and there games
but the uk moves more home consoles and games then japan.
japan dont even count any more in the console war
they sell very little home consoles there not enough to make a dent
in the world installed base of the 3 consoles
