Forums - Microsoft - Lot's of new information about Alan Wake. PC version delayed?

Pelaajalehti gaming magazine from Finland did get chance to go and meet Remedy guys in their office and see what's up with Alan Wake. It wasn't first time they did have that chance, but last visit was almost 4 years ago and lot of things have chance since.

Article is 6 page long, but here is new and most important things what they found out.

- Alan Wake was planned to be sandbox game where player can roam freely, but Remedy did notice that it's quite impossible to combine free world and intense story. They didn't want to make any compromises to story telling, so they did lose open world, but still they promises that player wont feel he is only an puppet in wires and player can make lot's of choices during game play.

- There will a lot of different characters in Bright Falls whose Alan Wake can communicate and even game isn't any more sandbox game, exploration is still in important role, because for example all pages of Alan Wakes lost novel won't be automatically found during game play.

- Even Microsoft is going to publish Alan Wake, Remedy still owns all rights to Alan Wake and they are planning to utilise and expand Alan Wake IP also in other medias. Game is only beginning of Alan Wake story.

- Maybe most shocking news was that PC version of Alan Wake isn't any more obvious truth. Last time Remedy did demo PC version of Alan Wake was back 2005 and latest demos and videos are from Xbox 360 version of game. Pelaaja did ask Remedy about PC version where they reply that Microsoft and they are going to talk only about Xbox 360 version of game and there isn't any news about PC version. (Maybe Microsoft is planning to use Alan Wake as publishing game of Windows 7, because it didn't quite make as publishing game of Windows Vista as it was first planned

There was also lot of things what is already said in other game medias and I won't try to translate those in here. Magazine did also included similar poster of Alan Wake, what was seen in Remedy office wall in images what was taken during January and posted to Alan Wake forum.

very interesting. im a bit saddened to see the loss of open world play and travel but the story is the most important thing and as long as that remains intact i will be pickng this game up day 1

Long Live SHIO!

The part about Remedy still owning the content rights of Alan Wake despite Microsoft publishing it is interesting. I am a little saddened about the PC version though, I was hoping this one to be one of the first games I get on my newly built PC, whenever I get around to building it that is.

No sandbox?...thank god. Big sandbox and horror DOES NOT WORK!

Branching paths? sure
Multiple people to talk to? amazing
But GTA like sandbox is not needed for horror games.

Sandbox is brilliant, if made right
But even in a good game it can become boring fast (Far Cry 2)

So they've decided to go the easy path and I think that was a good idea.

That's for the people who said it looked great, but Xbox360 version will look worse. That was October 2008.

And a story-driven game is great. I really want to be in this story. The story is the main motivation to finish games.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

People really thought the 360 was going to run an open world game with near Uncharted level graphics? :O

I suspect that this will be another PC/360 game that actually make it to PC until months if not years after the 360 version is released.

Here is few another things, which I forgot to put my first post.

- Game isn't actual horror game even atmosphere is very tormenting. Fighting against darkness is more like from action game than horror game (So no gimped Resident Evil 5 controls here. Yippee for that!!! That is probably reason why some game sites did put Alan Wake and Uncharted 2 to same category in they E3 listing).

- You can play game trough from start to finish even today. Now it's only about bug fixing and polishing. And Remedy have always kept they release dates (They haven't newer says any release time for Alan Wake before E3 09).

- They did need to build a lot of new tools from scratch to make this game possible been made by so small team (30 people in start, although team has grown a lot over 40 people + subcontractors over time). Making those tools has take much more time than they first did anticipated. One of those tools is WorldEditor, which reminds a bit Far Cry 2 field editor. They also uses automatic script bases tasking, which enables totally new way to do things in game. (Let's see how many games they will do with these tools. It would be really nice if they publish these tools to public like they did do with Max Payne 2 tools some time after release).
