Forums - Sony - The Reality behind a PS3 Slim

What was 'the reality behind' the PS1 and PS2 slims? Has anyone got an idea of how much they boosted sales? The PS2 didn't get a price cut when it got a slim version which was released in Nov 2004 (the PS2 had already been dropped to $149 in the Spring), but I don't have no idea how much it boosted sales, and the boost mite be hard to track anyway since it was launched in the middle of the Holiday season.

I just have some questions about that.

Is it sure the new PS3 slim will come with a price cut? Is production cost be lower even with a new 120GB hard drive?

a slim version without a price cut would probably help sales. When the PS3 was launched doesnt anyone remember the Japanese's main gripe with the console?

The console is to big. That's right, its to large. If the slim cuts the size in half it would instantly boost sales in Japan and other regions without a price cut.

I've been trying to find out the info on sales when the PS2 go the slim version but it  has been really hard. Someone said in another thread a few days back that the PS2 Slim was released at a higher price than the first model. I can't confirm that however but I'm almost sure that the PS3 Slim will sit at the same price of the regular PS3 model to make some money off it. They might drop the price if the Slim version doesn't meet their projections

What are you looking at, nerd?

Slim = lower price = more sales = profit!

Yeah, this is what im leaning towards as well. If anything, a slim launch means a slight increase in price initially, not a huge drop. So I dont believe thers gonna be a slim $299 in 2009. Maybe slim $349 at best, or a normal priced $399 slim but a price drop a few months later (to make some money off of the early adopters that grab the slim on launch day, just like the pricing seems to be on the PSP Go).

Anyway, it's hard to predict what a sales boost will be from a slim PS3 when we dont have historical data available.

PS3 slim + same price = boost in sales since it's the new thing, just like the PSP-to-PSP slim and DS-to-DS slim.

This also has the nice effect of being cheaper to manufacture, so Sony at this stage should not only have broken even but they could even be making a profit on the hardware, which then allows them to have an ace up their sleeve...and that is a price cut when sales start to slow.

I also believe that the PS3 slim even with a $100 price cut should allow Sony to continue to break even but at a lower to razer thin profit margin on hardware, which at the moment they don't seem to have as there still losing money.

So, I predict the following happening in this order:-

1: Firmware 3.0 announced/released with PS2 backwards compatibility which may/may not PS3 slim specific along with some rare classic PS2 download service.

2: PS3 slim announced and released near the holiday season, Christmas bundles made available with 1 or 2 packed in games and perhaps a blu-ray specific edition as well.

3: $50-$100 price cut around March which may coincide with the release of God of war 3, they could push it as a system seller.

This should allow Sony to boost PS3 sales as well as allow sony to stop losing money and even start making profit.
Now allot of people think that a price cut will come 1st, but with out the PS3 slim to absorb the price cut, they'll be losing more money which is something they don't want todo.
So logically speaking you'd want to release the slim so that when a price cut hits it absorbs it and Sony doesn't lose more money but between when the slim is released and the price cut is done Sony will be raking in the profit.
Right now however Sony is just going to deny or ignore PS3 slim rumours so that retail stock of current PS3 dry up so that they again minimise loss, great strategy I reckon if what I said actually turns out to be at least 80%-100% correct

Posting a "sony fails" thread in the sony section will just have people disagreeing with you, so maybe you should go post it in the 360 section next time so everybody will agree with you : )

To sony fans the PS3 is a success,
To sony haters it's a failure,
No point trying to convince the other side that you're right.

I dunno how legit my "Sony hater" credentials are, since I've owned two Sony consoles and thoroughly enjoyed both of them, but if you think that going from the most successful consoles in history to last place and completely erasing 7 years worth of profit is a success, you may in fact be deluded.

I don't see how a cosmetic lift would change sales in any way whatsoever- only handhelds benefit from that. The only definitive move sony (or any other system) can make is a price cut or a better gaming selection.
