Forums - Gaming - Are modern JRPG's for anime lovers?

I've come to an impasse with this genre that several hold so dear.  I'm starting to believe that Japanese Role Playing Games are just animes with leveling up.

Most JRPG's seem to borrow their artstyles, themes and archetypes from the anime scene and the fanbases and values within them seem to overlap.

People watch animes for the stories and the characters and the same can be said for JRPG's.

Maybe I've detracked a bit but what I'm trying to say is.. Are modern JRPG's for anime lovers/enthusiasts etc.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Well, Anime is obviously very Japanese, and JRPG's are obviously filled with Japanese influence so it makes perfect sense that if you like one you'll have a better chance of liking the other just because you seem to have a propensity for liking Japanese style media, but I don't think it is a prerequisite for enjoying a JRPG.

...

Haven't Jrpgs always been a representation of Anime? It is just Anime has changed like gaming has changed over the years. If you look at the art designs of older Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games they don't look too different from that of the Anime of the time. Though I guess they became more dependent on Anime as technology progressed enabling video games to have cut scenes and such. Today, I would say it is based on the game and the developer. There are tons of DS rpgs that are like Anime but in game form, while there are tons that focus on gameplay. It seems like all genres are going toward this dependence on other forms of media.

JRPGs have always had an anime influence but these days they seem to be heavily influenced.

Yes they are, but this genre isn't what the people want anymore they find it boring.

JRPGs have always been very directed to the "shonen" or juvenile japanese audience. That's what I like of games like Final Fantasy XII which take a different direction away of what's always been the standard of japanese rpgs...at least SE tried to steered that major franchise away from all that (shonen) anime look and themes. Hopefully FFXIII won't be a throw back to the old stereotypes and juvenile writing (I'm a little afraid just by the "acting" of some of the characters in the trailers...)

Well I think it's more a change in tone. JRPGs in the SNES/Genesis days used to be light-hearted and less-serious. Now they are super stylized serious affairs. Both tones draw from Anime, just different types of Anime.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

Older FF's art doesn't look so much like anime.

Especially the first one who are Yoshitaka amano:

Looks like Berserk though but that manga is known for his Western look.

Anyway a lot of Manga/anime artists are also working in the game world.

For an example Akira Toriyama.

If I'm not mistaken, haven't there been many JRPG artists and writers that have gone into anime, or vice versa? That would probably explain a lot.

Jups. A lot of manga artists are also gamers who also have the dream to make the art for their favourite game one day.

You have fanatics who would buy any game that buy every game where Akira Toriyama (DBZ guy) made the art for etc.

If you read manga you sometimes find text in it from the manga artist (like in the Naruto manga for an example) who talk a lot about their favorite games in their youth.
