Forums - Nintendo - Edge gives The Conduit and Another Code: R 4/10

The Wii, like all consoles, is meant for gamers not for amg Hardcore or casuals.

The only site that seems to have given The Conduit a sensible review was IGN. Maybe because it was a favorable review, it may seem why I think that way. However, literally 90% of the people here have opinions that match IGN's the most. The gaming media just hates the Wii too much to ever see its games for what they are, so why bother believing them.

I can understand the backlash of Wii fans to a certain extent as near the beginning of the generation it was quite hard to argue otherwise. But even as one of Grampy's most recent threads shows, the has been getting much fairer treatment as of late (I'm inclined to believe that it has always been generally fair with some obvious exceptions).

User reviews and anecdotes are great and all. I often base some of my purchases on them as well. But none of that makes this review any less valid or biased. Edge is often criticized for its marking scheme, which I think is completely unjustified. I mean a 4 from Edge is the equivalent of a 6-7.5 from most other sites. They simply thought it was slightly below average.

It's not as simple as saying most gamers' line of thought aligned with IGNs moreso than any other and therefore all other reviews are 'hating'. Hell, I don't even know why I'm debating this... Edge gave many raving reviews for exclusive Wii titles.

For God's sake, Indiana Jones got a 3, with endless waggle, PS2 graphics, and brief length. The Conduit is better in every regard and only gets a 4? Cut the crap.

I have said this before and I will say it again:

From now on, NO 3rd Party Wii game will ever get a 90% average on metacritic, gamestats, gamerankings etc, again. There have already been four and I'm sure there will be more. My guess at the closest one - Beatles: Rock Band, maybe Little King's Sory.

Just for some context, here are some score Edge has given to some popular Wii games:

Galaxy - 10

Zelda:TP - 9

Brawl 9

Mario Kart Wii - 6

Punch Out!! - 8

MP3 - 7

RE4 - 9

LKS - 9

Zack and Wiki - 8

Boom Blox - 8

Super Paer Mario - 7

Mad World - 6

Wii Sports - 7

exactly, they gave good (passable)scores that people expected from them from typical nintendo games(galaxy) that would get them stoned and killed for lack for credibility. If you give mario galaxy a bad score nobody would believe your reviews again, they were forced even if they hated the game to give it a high score.Games that didnt alter to threat the status quo, that arent bold or different for the wii. Boom blox, a typical wii game, why would you criticize it? its the typical game you expect on a wii(good as it is) , why bother giving zack and wiki a low score, nobody cares about the little game, so even if i bomb the score for it, nobody would get angry...

Buuut the conduit is a whole different breed, its a game that threatens to show wii entering the "hardcore realm", is not 1st party, is a easy prey, since it is not an stablished franchise,a and you know you will upset wii owners. You have to give a horrid score to show the wii is meant to casuals!  If theres big expectations for a bold game and theres people wanting to hear them put it down(namely , a number of non wii owners) regardless of quality, you will.

I think you're taking way too much into this.

As mentioned in my most recent post in this thread, they're notorius for lowballing several high scoring games. That's all there really is to it. They thought it to be slightly worse than average. I don't understand the anger and conspiracies derived from this.

Even though IGN overrated the Conduit, they are one of the only fairly consistently accurate review sites. I like Gametrailers and VGC too though. Too bad 1up ditched the 1up show. Now the site is useless...

Metacritic shouldn't count Edge reviews since they obviously are using a much different scale than everyone else, a 4 is probably about a 6 compared to how everyone else rates games.  GiantBomb on the other hand, has no excuse for their ridiculous 4 besides being trolls.

Oh well, I will buy the games I like no matter what.  Lets hope sales aren't impacted too much...

lol, metacritic shouldnt count itself either then, since they also grade on a 1-10 (59=C)

im a little pissed about another code:r tho

Yeah true...  I was like WTF the first time I noticed one of 1up's scores converted like that...

Off topic; I knew Edge would give the Multiplat Prototype a higher score than the PS3 exclusive InFamous. Well, Edge suck anyway.

They gave MGS4 an 8 right? so no surprise

Giant Bomb gave this a 40 too. You thought GamePro was bs low. Too much hype?

Giant Bomb is one of the worst sites on the internet when it comes to the Wii.  I said that days before their Conduit review, and I will continue to say it.

The uproar over the Gamepro review was not about the score.  The uproar was about the content of the review, which was absolute trash.  Most of it was outright lies about the game.  Given that, their 3.5/5 wasn't that bad.  However, I'm starting to think that the attention that review got gave a lot of other people the idea that it would be a good idea to trash the game wihout reason.

As i often say, Edge is the only magazine that actually rates games on a scale of 1-10, unlike all other outlets which seem to use the 5-10 scale.

That being said, havent played the conduit yet so i dont know whether or not to have a meltdown about this review :P

Basically, kudos to edge for making a point score mean a damn!

As I often say, this is bullshit!

Every single videogame site uses the 1-10 scale, but EDGE fans/fanboys are bringing this up every time EDGE underrates a game, because they want to justify their fanboyism.

IGN recently gave Damnation and Cross Edge 2.5/10 and 3.5/10 respectively, so what exactly is that 5-10 scale you are talking about?

Ok maybe i didnt explain it in the best way possible...

The mean score for edge reviews is around 5, with a normal distribution around that.

And just because people only expect to see games in the 5-10 range across the board doesnt mean edge has to go along with it, its a massive issue in the review world and at some point, due to score inflation, only games that get 90+ will be seen as worthwhilie.

Again im not agreeing with their review, i havent read it, i just agree with the scoring system edge uses!

That's not true.  The average score for an Edge review is 63.35%.  Yes that is harsher than most websites, but it is over 13 points away from a 5 out of 10.
