Forums - Gaming - Price of the PS3 slim

Okay, let's say, hypothetically, that Sony releases a PS3 slim. What do you think it'll be priced at? Do you think it'll have BC, and if so, will that affect the price?

No BC if released before PS2's death.

Price? $350. Would be $300, but Sony is at a time when it really needs profits.

Ooh. Sorry, forgot to ask. What impact do you think the slim would have on the other models?

Old ones will have their prices cut to get rid of the existing stock.

I think they will charge $25 per pound for the PS3 Slim.

Tease.

How much Slim versions usually cost at launch? (PS1 and PS2)
Dont they usually just replace existing models but the actual drop in price comes a bit later (within a year)?

I think it will coincide with a $50 pricecut whenever it arrives.
I wonder if it will have a massive power brick like the 360?

It seems more likely to me that the slim comes with a mark up, not a price cut. If we go by the PSPGo's price difference, it'll retail for about $500 for a low end model and $600 if they make a high end one.

First of piningforthefjords I am absolutely in love with your username and I kinda wish I thought of it first.

Secondly...

The prices of the original PS1's and PS2's at launch were US$299. The PSone (slim) had a launch price of US$99 and the PS2 slimline had a launch price of US$149 (?). If you work out the depreciation over the years you should be able to accurately work out the drop in price for the technology.

The original PS1 and PSone (slim) were launched 6 years apart (94/95 vs 2000)

The original PS2 and PS2 slimline were launched 5 years apart (99/00 vs 2004)

Therefore the depreciation each year is...

PS1 = $149/$299 = ~50%/6 = 8.30% depreciation per annum
PS2 = $99/$299 = ~33%/5 = 6.6% depreciation per annum

I'm going to make a very big assumption and take an average from these two figures and say it will have a depreciation of 7.5% per annum.

The PS3 was $399 over 4 years ago, so...

$399*0.925^3 = $315.

So my hypothetical pricepoint would be $300 - $320 assuming it is released in time for the holidays this year.

Anyway, it doen't matter because Sony will stick a price on it for what the feel would be most profitable.

To the power of 4? I don't understand why you'd do that.
