All PS3's have ps1 BC.

I haven't touched my ps2 since I got ps3, I have the 40GB ps3 without b/c. Still I doubt I'd play the ps2 games on ps3 (well maybe FF12).
Methinks this tech will be for a PS2 downloadable game service. At this point Im not too sure if its worth having BC in the system due to the fact that you can make a lot of money off of DL'ed games instead of giving the money to gamestop.
Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.
Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

That makes sense and I wouldn't mind. There are some PS2 gems I simply cannot find. Ico and Persona 3 come to mind.

That... would be awesome.
1 drawback i see though, is how the hell will they get all the PS2 games on, if they havent even got the whole PS1 library yet?

Hmm.. I don't see any Shadows or Vorlons here.
This is a follow-up patent (from late 2007) describing the emulation of the emotion engine in the PS3. Nowhere do I see mentioning the emulation of the graphics synthesizer of the PS2 in the pictures or the patent application (You know, the one chip they could never emulate in software due to excessive memory bandwith usage in the PS2).

...skynet online! D:
This is old tech. Furthermore, this implementation is only slightly different than the HLE that has been used for years to kludge emulation of advanced systems.
I remember when UltraHLE was released, and everyone went crazy. However, each game required lots of TLC to make work. It would be cool if true, but I don't think we'll be seeing any comprehensive PS2 emulation on newer PS3 systems any time soon.

Come on, they're getting better! We get around 1 PS1 game a week.
Its not that surprisingly the possibility is there. There are already emulators on the internet for PS2 on a normal PC. This is basically the same thing but translated from PC code to PS3 cell code.
On the other hand, I expect they will never get 100% compatibility with all older games, just like the 360 has only partial compatibility.
