Tales of Vesperia. Lost Odyssey is amazing too, so you can't go wrong with either. But Vesperia is by faaaar the best Tales game in existence, and one of the best JRPGs ever.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.
I think it really depends on do you prefer turn based or action based combat system. I like way more turn based so LO would be my choise.
Haven't played Tales yet but I have Lost Oddessy. The best thing about the game is the english voice acting, characters, music and DREAMS
The combat system is good with lots to learn but still fairly dated as is the random battles (I'm sick of those, thought they died years ago).
Some of the fights are quite hard and shouldnt be fought until you complete the game second time round (saves all your experiance). Oh and it comes on 4 discs which is a shame.
To make the choice easy:
If you like classic turnbased battles, go for Lost Odyssey
If you like dynamic battles, go for Tales of Vesperia

If you want a game with a combat system simpler than decade or two old RPGs, get Lost Odyssey. And if you want a great game that excels in the most important aspect of any game (the gameplay), get Tales of Vesperia.
