Forums - Sony - My PS3 is dead...AGAIN!!

If you notice the fan speed is slowly getting louder and louder, a fair bet is that the PS3 is getting clogged with dust, which will eventually lead to overheating and lockups/Ylods. One thing you can do is turn off the PS3, and then switch it off with the rear switch. Then, press down on the eject and power buttons at the same time, and flick the rear power switch back to on. Keep holding down the eject and power buttons until you get a beep, and then a few seconds later, the fans will spin up to full speed in reverse (very loud, sounds like a hair dryer), this will last for around 15 seconds and then you'll get a double beep and it'll do to standby.

When I've tried it on mine I noticed a bit of dust get blown back out of the PS3, but my PS3 isn't very dusty anyway. Its worth a shot anyway, Sony wouldn't have programmed it in if it didn't do anything.

This is a good tip.

When my 60GB died last winter, the fans were definitely running faster than normal, indicating the heatsinks were getting clogged.

Ironically, the console finally died not less than two weeks after it was thoroughly cleaned out with compressed air. A few small dust balls and debris blew out, but combined with the sheer number of runtime hours it had (over 5,000 due to Folding), the damage was already done.

So if your console is running louder than normal (fans), it would be a very good idea to clean it out with this fan function and some compressed air.

And your point is? If everyone made a thread when their console died then VG chartz would suck. We don't want to hear ur whinging

Well, actually we do. Because this is a PS3..a 60GB model no less. It just solidifies the fact that the 60GB models are inherantly faulty. Something some people do not like to admit. Also, The PS3 does not break down as much as the 360, so these threads should not be many in numbers.

Don't forget your helmet there, Master Chief!

I'm warning people that the 60GB is faulty, and I just got it repaired last month. The 60GB sucks.

Yep mine just went yesterday, well out of the warranty but £125 is not the end of the world for a replacement coming tommorrow. still it does seem a little sus that all these 60gb are failing now

assumption is the mother of all f**k ups

I agree that the 60 Gb has definitely more faults than more recent models.

I've got 3 PS3s at home right now, one broken 60 Gb with an expired guaranty and 2 more recent 80 Gb PS3 under 3 year guaranty.

I must have the world record in broken PS3s. My 60 Gb actually broke 3 times, once due to the blueray drive, once due to the ylod and once that was the display card. I'm done with backward compatibility, when I want to read PS2 games I'll simply use... my PS2. (which never broke, not even once).

The 60 Gb PS3 is not that reliable. By the way, if you look closely at more recent 80 Gb models, you'll see they completely redesigned the PS3, video outputs / network adapters / power, everything is in a different order.

is there a way to back up all my saved data as opposed to doing each file individually?

This 60gb is going to break is such a myth.. just because random people on forums are claiming there console is breaking(not saying they are lying).

My 60gb works perfectly fine and I bought it a month after its Launch in 2006.

Yes, I think it's in the system menu. Just do a 'backup' on an external drive. Any PS3 owner should do that as often as possible, depending on how much you use your PS3.

I lost 1 year of saved games once, that hurts a lot. Especially since I was about to start the last mission of Valkyria Chronicles. THAT was painful.

@leo-j : I don't think it's a myth since mine broke 3 times, but of course depending on whether our PS3 broke or not, we believe or not in the myth...

The real answer is nobody knows really, except Sony of course...

One fact / hint they give us is they redesigned completely the PS3, as I told you the components are not at all in the same order in recent models. If there was no problem, I doubt they would have changed the design. It costs money after all.
