Yes, I think it's in the system menu. Just do a 'backup' on an external drive. Any PS3 owner should do that as often as possible, depending on how much you use your PS3.
I lost 1 year of saved games once, that hurts a lot. Especially since I was about to start the last mission of Valkyria Chronicles. THAT was painful.
