Forums - Sales - Why Do Wii Games That Flop Mean More?

If nintendo catered to the traditional gamers, traditional gamers would buy the system, and would buy traditional games. Nintendo did not cater to traditional gamers early on, and neither did the 3rd parties, so in turn traditional gamers are not so keen on buying the system, and therefore cannot buy the traditional games that come out.

People use the sales of mature/hardcore/traditional games to prove several things about Nintendo including, but not limited to: the abandonment of the traditional gamer, non-competition, demographic, and also to portray nintendo as an outsider that we gamers should avoid or distrust.

Traditional gamers the like games like Metroid, Smash Bros, Galaxy, or Mario Kart? Or do those games not count because they are first party with Mario in the title Super, like Rol pointed out in another thread.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Wii still has to prove that it can sell certain genres. But you're right, most of the flops just haven't been appealing games.

Which genres would that be..just curious.

Just compare the sales of CoD WaW, yeah it sold 1m on Wii, but it sold 3m on PS3. So yeah it can sell mature games, but in most cases they would be better off on PS360

Soriku already addressed this, but furthermore by your logic, Guitar Hero flopped on PS3 because compared to the Wii version and 360 versions its sold more than 1million less?

Putting the Blame on Nintendo is the most common excuse on why games do not sale, next to the "Nintendo games sell on Nintendo Systems" excuse. Most of the reasons is because the system defies the normal conventions on what the game consoles should be.

The poor sales has been the best evidence of haters because they thing it should not be denied. So the blame on Nintendo instead of the develoeprs themselves is either to feed up the desire for Nintendo to fail, or to avoide the genres to evolve on the system because of fear.

Saying "In Nintendo catered to the Core......." is lame and just shows the lack od analysis many people have. Nintendo looks to expand the market nad have more people to play games. So they have to make games for that expansion as well as games for the core. However, Nintendo cannot do that alone.

This is my point, no other console deals with that notion. Games that flop on the other consoles are never the fault of the system, which is true, I jus think this logic can't be exclusive to PS3 and 360 as it is also true of The Wii.

I have been doing a lot of thinking as to why I don't like the Wii. I think I have finally realized what the problem is. It may be the same for many PS3/X360 gamers. It's the fact that the Wii is not a new generation of consoles. They took the GameCube and developed a new control scheme. It's the same reason PS3/X360 gamers rarely or never play the PS2/XBOX. How many people do you know that still play Halo 2 or SOCOM 3? Both amazing games for the previous generation that are just old. It's just annoying to see developers make good games that are crap when compared to the HD consoles. I, personally, just don't pay attention. I follow Wii games as closely as I follow PS2 games. I'll get the new Mario and Zelda games, but when it comes to anything not made by Nintendo, I want to play on a current genration system. My guess is the people complaining just want the game and do not want to play on an old system.

I have moved and do not have the internet at home, yet.

You'd be surprised by how many people still play older games today.

Also, contrary to popular belief, the better iterations of such games were better the generation before or even in the one preceeding the last one. SF3 is better than 4, GTA3 was better than 4, DMC2 was better than 4, OoT was better than TP, MGS1 was better than 4 and RE4 was better than 5, the list goes on.

@Munkeh

But CoD4 wasn't on the Wii, and the Wii version is inferior to the HD versions.

CoD3 sold better on Wii than PS3.

PS3 almots had 0 userbase when COD3 was ported on PS3

well people call wii games flop despite the fact that most of them need to sell only 200-250k to start making profit. heck i doubt development of de blob took more than 6-7mln$ especially that it's a new enhanced version of pc game(so they had basic graphics, mechanics, ideas etc.) - it's hard to call 700k a flop on a platform like wii. it's hard to call 600k(GTA sales) on ds a flop considering development costs of ds games and the fact that the game will be selling 6-20k a week for the next 2 years.
there was more ps360 games that flopped than wii games.

i would like to know what those ps360 fanboys think bout games like Shaun White - sold 1.06mln on ps360 and still flopped. Mirror's Edge sold 1.27mln and EA wasn't pleased much about it which means they barely made profit out of this game, but there's a lot o thing that can be improved and they have all the mechanics of the game ready so with the right PR and development sequel can be sucessful. still though it sold more than 1.2mln copies(excluding pc version). we can easily asume that average hd games have to sell 1mln to break even not to mention bigger projects like GTA4, Assassins Creed series, Killzone 2(i doubt KZ2 made a profit considering development costs and advertisment), Burnout Paradise etc.

COD 3 was a launch game for both systems

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."
