Forums - Nintendo - Why New Super Mario Bros. Wii is such a big deal

Hopefully this sells like hotcakes spiked with cocaine, and becomes the first title to break one gazillion units sold, heralding in a new, glorious age of 2D gameplay.

Hehe. Realistically, I hope sales of this show there is still a demand for new 2D console games. It's a pity that 2D was mostly shoved onto handhelds starting with the PS1, so much more can be done with 2D gameplay these days, than was possible on the SNES.

YES! Couldn´t agree more. I love it when there are clever people with taste out there like yourself.

2D Mario platformer = $$$$

They are rare and popular, people relish the launch of 2D mario platformers I think. This game will have long legs. I reckon 12 million minimum, 20 million tops

Unlike some of the high predictions from people on this site (Conduit is not going to sell 2.5m units week 1), I'd actually say this has a reasonable chance of being true, especially looking at sales of NSMB DS. Though, I imagine everyone is going to call it a "flop" when it fails to meet some imaginary benchmark on week 1, ignoring that it's likely going to be the type of title that has an okay lauch, but keeps going like an engergizer bunny with viagra.

On the other hand, there is the real possibility that it will fail to sell in great numbers (I imagine a "fail" scenario being 3-5m units sold, still respectable, but not asskicktacular) which would suck, and harm the case for new console 2D games.

WTB new 2D console Metroid, Sonic.

I know you're purposefully keeping yourself short rol, but I feel that your post was not complete. It lacked something.

I think the word was multiplayer. I'm not sure. Just my 2 cents.

It makes perfect sense for the Wii, that's why it wasn't implemented before. Wii is a multiplayer experience, NSMB is gna rock!

Just look at World of Goo, Braid, or Boy and his Blob. Beautiful games with fantastic art, and they don't need to be 3d to do it.
