It's not just a 2D Mario... it's a multiplayer 2D Mario, which is something I have been dreaming of since I was 5 years old!
I always wondered how awesome it would be to be able to play games like Mario 1-3 with both players playing simultaneously as Mario and Luigi circa the original Mario Bros. arcade game, and now Nintendo has finally made that a reality! Only thing that would make it better would be if players 3 and 4 could be Toad and Princess so we'd have the original Mario 2 lineup united once again!

2D Mario is f--- awesome and i agree that its being severely underplayed and undervalued.

I now have a vision of Mario & the rest of the cast in a Paper Mario-style RPG set in The Village, which... I think might be the coolest thing ever.

They've got to add princess as a playable character! I can't imagine they'd ship the game with two different toads as the only options for players three and four. Look at all the characters in mario kart, brawl, sluggers, strikers... there's no way they'd miss throwing a few more characters in there.
