Forums - Nintendo - XSEED talks about sales and new titles

Seems like new DS and Wii titles'll be announced this July:

- Little King's Story is set for July 21st, and North America gets an extra hard difficultly level called 'Tyrant'
- Rune Factory: Frontier sales were 'OK'
- XSEED will not be pursuing Kizuna
- XSEED is not commenting on the combat aspect of Fragile. They aren't sure if anything will be tweaked for NA release.
- Two secret titles are coming...one to Wii and one to DS: "There are still two titles that we haven't announced yet; one for Wii and one for DS. Both of these titles are scheduled to be revealed in July."

Well there're plenty of options for DS titles, but the Wii tilte is a mystery. What could it be?

Rune Factory sold 80k. OK sounds like break-even. Just got over the hump of profitability.

Sales were OK, not are OK, so it must've met the expectations already. That brings up the question, "What were they expecting"? Sounds like 75k was the goal.

Based off pure revenue, thats like $3.6m........................what is going on?

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

Remember though that they don't get all of that money: retailers, distributors, the developer, Nintendo, and more all get their pound of flesh. They're probably okay with the sales because they only publish the game, so the price of development doesn't fall on them, but I would have liked to see much higher numbers for the title: it's a great game, and anyone who hasn't picked it up yet should at least consider it. I still pop it in once and again, 140 hours later.

you are probably true, sounds logical, otherwise Xseed and others would stop making Wii games long time now

maybe that's why they said they were depressed about Little King's Story in Europe which had a very slow start and did much worse than Rune Factory

i hope they advertise Little King in NA, for justice!

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Actually X-SEED is just the publisher for the game in North America: Japanese and PAL sales mean nothing to them. You're thinking of the developer, Marvelous.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure if DS games break even at 80k, let alone a exclusive Wii title.

Most DS games actually would (Ubisoft's DS games cost as little as $800k to make, although obviously some cost more). I'd imagine a Phoenix Games Wii title could be profitable at 80k...but they're probably the only ones who could get away with that. Make no mistake, Rune Factory's almost certainly not a bank-breaker for most companies, but it'll take much more than 80k for it to break even.

Which is what I'm trying to say. A whole lot of work went into making Rune Factory. It isn't a cheap cash-in.

I have a lot of respect for Xseed. They seem to be trying areally hard to deleiver on quiality games for Wii. Trouble is no one knows about them.

I've been told that third parties get $21 out of every $50 for Wii games. Nintendo, retailers, shipping, advertising, making the discs, takes out over half the revenue. Supposedly Wii games usually cost $2-5m to make, so unless a game has a really low budget, you need to sell 95,000 copies or so on average to make a profit.

If third parties got a similar 42% for DS games, they'd get ~$15 per title. The difference is that DS development costs are probably only $500,000 to $2,000,000 or something. So you can probably break even on a DS title with 35,000 units or so if it has a low budget and I figure just about any DS title to sell 135,000 is profitable.
