Forums - Sony - Are Sony's non gaming projects for PS3 really worth it for the extra sales?

I believe Sony has spent lot of money and much much more precious resources on lots of non-gaming related projects for PS3

like

- Home

- VidZone

- Folding for PS3

- Now working on Cloud

- than on smaller scale browsers and media players & codecs.

I believe that if these resources were spent on game development than Sony could easily have launched 2 exclusive games which could have given a better return for the Sony and also would have given boast to the sales of the PS3. after all at the end of the day the most important factor for anyone to be convinced to buy a PS3 is the games and only games.

Wot do u think? do u believe having these entertainment services also played role in ur decission to buy a PS3?

I think the projects you mentioned were worth it. Not sure how much they'de be tied to game releases myself.

I doubt that Folding@Home costs them much money, if any since it was Stanford University's program, I am sure they are the one that optimized it for the PS3 so I dont think that they lost any money on that.

Cloud was confirmed fake

Home is not a waste of money since it is bringing in revenue, and may become self-sustaining in the future, possibly.

For future sales? I don't think that they make a big impact.

For current owners, however, it is a sweet bonus.

Firstly, Home is generating Sony a lot of revenue, ads, clothing, spaces, etc, etc. Folding at home costed Sony about 5 bucks, all you do is donate. Vidzone is great and will push casual music lovers in Europe to purchase a PS3. If I was Sony I would stop fooling around and sign contracts with Twitter, Facebook, AIM, Blockbuster.

To be completely honest...

I could live without them.

can't wait for Track Season 2009/2010, guna beast out!

Travis Touchdown ERECTION CONFIRMED!

- Home

That's made a lot of money back. A LOT.

- VidZone

How expensive could that have been, really?

- Folding for PS3

They didn't do anything. It's Stanford's program.

- Now working on Cloud

Fake.

- than on smaller scale browsers and media players & codecs.

Improves the experience, and again, not expensive- a browser was already in place with the PSP.

(Former) Lead Moderator and (Eternal) VGC Detective

thats what makes it the all in one home entertainment console

They don't need Facebook contracts. The browser makes pretty much any site available,

1) Vidzone has advertisements and also sells ringtones and allows you to purchase music and music videos. It makes them money!

2) Home has something for everyone- poker, pool, chess, checkers, bowling, racing, treasure hunt events and more. It has a huge community and it makes them money.

3) playstation life- this is fantastic for those who like to stay updated on world affairs. It has global news and weather from the worlds news sites displayed in a real time orbiting earth.

Errr, why would we need that?
