Best console graphics!

Next, Megaman treats us to his newest Top 5 listing: the world's top 5 tallest midgets!

Just add Crysis and Crysis Warhead on place 1 and 2, then you have "Best graphics"

it IS that easy.

Nah. Mirror's Edge would jump from "pretty good," as it is on consoles, to "better than anything but Crysis" on PC. If you haven't seen it, it's fantastic.

And then there are RTS, like Dawn of War II, which have exceptional graphics. That game would absolutely demolish the PS3/360. It would run even worse than Supreme Commander did on the 360.

Of course, RTS tend to be discounted because people usually mean individual character models when they talk about graphics, not a more general sense of graphical accomplishment. The fact that RTS tend to have modestly detailed characters automatically makes them "bad," even if the game then proceeds to show 200 of those characters on screen simultaneously all acting independantly.

But, yeah. Mirror's Edge PC. Dawn of War II would chew up the PS3/360 and spit them out in 10 seconds.

ill explain it again, there is greater technical achivement in doing more with less, there is beter engeneering in Killzone2 and Gears2 than in Crysis, why ?better use of resources means way better techniques been used, so if you need 8GB of ram and a quadra cell with a year 2020 graphic card to render a pixar movie in real time that is not better that Ucharted 2 that can look the way it does, with a modified Nvidia 7300 , a Cell processor and 256MB of ram.

So to be fair we need to wait for crysis 2 on consoles and compare that to Killzone and uncharted 2, if it Looks better then we can give credit to crytek, if not then guerrilla and naugthy dog are much better programers. Also we could put guerrilla and naugthy dog to develop for PC without resource restrictions and see if crysis can match their graphics.

Okay, so "doing more with less" is being considered here?

Then pretty clearly the most impressive game is on the DS or another portable. I might pick Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Have you seen some of the iPhone games? You'll be amazed what some developers can do with that hardware. God of War:CoO should also get a mention.

What I can promise you is that 0 games from the PS3/360 will be on this hypothetical list. None of these games come close to stretching that hardware like some DS or other handheld games. How could they? Uncharted, for example, hasn't come close to maximizing the PS3, because Naughty Dog told us so directly. In fact, we hear all the time from Sony that their hardware hasn't come close to being maximized yet.

Using your definition, here is my personal list:

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
God of War: Chains of Olympus
Plants Vs. Zombies iPhone
Dragon Quest IX
Resistance: Retribution

I'm probably missing many iPhone/Smartphone games, since I know less about them. Regardless, your list is ridiculous given your apparent constraints. Any mention of PS3/360 games is absolutely laughable by your definition. None of those games come close to pushing the constraints of their systems.

Well PC has no stadard hardware so comparing a PC game with no resource constrains like crysis doesnt make sense, and you have no way of knowing if those handlelds are doing more with what they have than ps360 games, in consoles resource are exploited to te limit in cell phones a lot is reserved for the main purpose the device was build so an iphone game is not pushing the iphone to the limit no matter how good it look, Ds and PSP could be, and in any case comparing DS/PSP games to PS360 games is more fair than comparing ps360 to PC games, spcially the way crysis was made, that game looks like crap in most PCs

Hey, why we don't add PC to the list?

1 - Crysis moded
2 - Crysis Warhead moded
3 - Stalker: Clear Sky
4 - Far Cry 2 on PC
5 - Vanilla Crysis

:P

PS. no kids, Forza 3 won't ever top a console graphics list since Uncharted 2 will have already released and Gran Turismo 5 is coming with same level graphics and higher resolution.

I think it's a silly distinction, but I'm willing to run with it because I'm not trying to pick fights. The important point I was making is this: if there are no restrictions, then obviously PC has 5 games that will win; if you have your restrictions (i.e. what you can do with limited hardware), then clearly many games have come closer to maximizing the PSP/DS than the 360/PS3, and thus this entire thread should be littered with handheld games almost exclusively. Even the Wii is likely to go unmentioned, even though I'm quite sure a game like Galaxy pushed the system quite hard. There really are no rules you can make under which PS3/360 games are going to come out on top, unless you explicitly and directly make it a "best graphics on PS3/360" thread, which I think we can agree sounds pretty silly.

It's fine that you have your opinion. But not everyone has your opinion. Alot of the internet is mixed as to what is the best graphics after E3. Certainly not clear among public forum goers around the web. Some say Uncharted 2, some say Forza 3, some say Alan Wake, others Lost Planet 2 and also Assasins Creed 2. And to a lesser extent some say Heavy Rain or Splinter Cell Convicion. The point is it really is out of any of the above that ring out around the forums from all websites.

So calling people children because they don't conform to your ideals is just so wrong.

RE5 shouldnt be on that list. Yes it looks very nice but the graphics are too cartoonyinstead of realism.

GT5 prologue deserves a spot on that list.

I think Burnout:Paradise deserves an honerable mention.

I'm sorry, but the number one game is 8 years old and on the gamecube. Yeah, it's metroid prime. The most important part of graphics imo are design art and atmosphere. I could care less how much polygons a game has(or whatever makes a game look better, I don't know anything about it)

Its an amazing game, and it has very good graphics.. but sorry those games are higher up, much higher up

You'll hear lots of disagreement from certain people - particularly the "art direction is all that matters, technology means nothing" crowd. However, I think those are pretty widely recognized as the top 5 console graphics so far this gen. The exact order for #2 through #5 changes, but the games remain the same.

When it comes to art direction, Prince of Persia, BioShock, and Braid are three games that wowed me personally.
