I guess this thread was definitely not the best place for Tales fans to express their opinion...sad, just sad.

It's the perfect place, but I don't see how anyone can be more excited for a Tales game over a new main Final Fantasy unless you only play action RPGs.

FF generally has more impressive tech, it's not always better other than that, if you judge the games based on tech along, then FF will win out every time for sure, in other aspects, that's not always true.

Well, sure that stuff flies here because there is a huge Tales fanbase here.

I'm willing to bet that Final Fantasy XIII will be better in every aspect.

@ forest-spirit

Team Destiny is making this? That'll be interesting as it's their first 3D console game.

@ Daz

Still fighting the good fight, eh?

that's a dangerous gamble =P since I'm a JRPG maniac and I've never liked FF combat better than Tales >=D but have always felt FF is a little more immersive because of the their tech aspect, however, if your mind is already set in stone, then there is not much to say.

Oh my mind isn't set in stone, but I don't see how it can. The best Tales game I've ever played wouldn't top my favorite 5 Final Fantasy games.

And I already said that the think that those who prefer Action RPGs will prefer ToG's combat, because it's an action RPG. I've played the Tales system before, as each game has only taken what the previous Tales game has done before and adds to it. They don't do anything innovative. They add something that enhance the system more, but the core formula has remained the same since Symphonia.

@ Daz

It was just a joke where you gave a ludicrious statement, by assuming an unlikely position.

And Tales of Vesperia was not a bad game. It takes everything from Symphonia and Abyss and improves on it.

you do realize that the FF13 combat system is straight from Xenogears right?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh HELL NO. I just noticed. It is like an amp form of Xneogears's combat system. My hype for FF13 just went down BIG TIME. Nobody rips off the greatest rpg of all time.

it's not a rip off, it's made by the same company, I will kill you dood.

Yeah you really didn't have to go that far.

watch the game play videos again, that's what it is. if you remember how xenogears was and loved every minute of it, you'd see a lot of the same. the difference is graphics and presentation, the system is uh, not too different.

I've played the Final Fantasy 13 demo several times, and I didn't feel it too much.

@outlaw

you are just going through menus instead of 4 button pressing, it's just in disguise. it's not uncommon for square to take a system they already came up with and change it just a little for their RPGs since they already had some good ones.

Soriku, your favorite series are Tales and Kingdom Hearts. You love TWEWY. I don't see how you argue that you don't prefer action RPGs to more traditional RPGs.

Changing up the camera does not equal innovation, and removing free run only takes us back to Team Destiny's earlier 2D battle systems.

Final Fantasy has changed things from each iteration since 6 on. (as 6 -> 7)

FF4->FF6 had some pretty minor changes, but nothing too crazy.

So? That doesn't mean I don't like turn based. Because I think my second favorite series ever (Tales and KH tie for #1) is Baten Kaitos. And that's turn based. And like I said, FF XIII isn't totally turn based. Heck I loved FF VIII's battle system and I wish they'd use that again except for the draw system. Keep the speed and stuff and that'd make the best FF battle system easy IMO (and it wouldn't even be too hard to make).

Also, the only real crazy change in FF is FF XII (I don't count FF XI). But Tales has gone from 2D to 3D and that's a big change. I don't see how you're criticizing Tales for not changing much when FF is just the same most of the time.

What? X->XII wasn't the only change.

Explain how they are similar.

But they are taking the combat system from the greatest rpg of all time. For years Xenogears' combat system was one of a kind and now FF13 is trying to ruin that.

I like the FF13 combat, it's about time they took that system and improved on it. It just still doesn't have the depth of a Tales combat system.

It's still the same going through the whole Attack, Item, Magic, and whatever else they use (Summons for example) menu. Every game. They add a couple twists, but so does Tales. And that's for FF1-FF10. FF XII is the one that really changed. FF XIII seems to take some inspiration from FF XII.

Job system? Materia? Junctioning? FF2's exlcusion of leveling up?

I mean, you're really marginalizing here.

And you're giving too much credit for them taking the series 3D whenever Square did it in 1997.

Thats....not exactly a good thing.

see now, FF13 didn't take much from FF12, they even changed the encounter style, FF12 combat was more like Parasite Eve 1, which is a damn good game as well.
