Forums - Nintendo - Metroid: Other M to use IR aiming in 2d sections?

This is not a rumor.

There isn't a source for this.

It's just me speculating.

I'm sure many of you Metroid afficionados have noticed in the trailer for this game that in the 2d sequence Samus fires into the background. Anyone care to wager a couple scenerios on the control method you would use to make this happen.  I would hope that holding down and shooting puts Samus into some sort of a crouch/shooting position...and that up and shoot would have her firing skyward.  So unless they plan on having you hold a separate button to aim into the background (which seems like overkill) something else is definitely going on.

I believe it's possible that Sakamoto/Team Ninja might be using the IR on the wii remote to pull this off, especially as both Sakamoto and Yosuke Hayashi have went on record stating that one of the goals in creating this new Metroid is to make the game more accessible, while retaining the Metroid feel.

The only problem I have with substantiating this is that there is no on screen reticule, which seems to put a pretty big hole in my theory.  On the other hand, if you were to use the IR not in a one-to-one connection with samus, but rather in the traditional 8 points of aim found in Super Metroid as well as Zero Mission and Fusion it wouldn't be difficult to aim where you wanted without an onscreen compass.

Any thoughts?  Is this possible? And what would you think of that as a control scheme?

Man i can't wait to see this title in action. If it really is 2D in a 3D world that would be awesome.

I dont even care about OP........that screen looks gorgeous..i cant wait,..Im gonna play Super Metroid again.

i'm loving the screen shot, I think I will download Super Metroid to tide me over to the Prime Trilogy Release to tide me over till Other M comes out.....

OT: It makes sense, I can't think of how else you could shoot at the background, might also include WM+ so you could just turn the controller to the left to shoot to the background and to the right to shoot to the foreground....

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

maybe it has headtracking and as you turn your head the scene moves so you can just point and shoot at items close and far....

I would like IR aiming in 2D sections.

If this game is predominantly 2D, then that's fine.... but if I can only shoot in 8 directions it will go down on my list of wanted games.

----------

The lack of a reticule could be explained.... first, perhaps Nintendo took it out to quell speculation about it (or indeed encourage speculation) or it could just not have one, instead you rely on looking at Samus' cannon to see which direction you fire at.... She seems to be sufficiently large on the screen for this to be viable.

Very good...yes, that would work.

Simply having eight directions wouldn't bother me, since it would feel like old school Metroid (well almost...true old school Metroid would only have three directions ), but I would gladly accept more.

And I did think that it would be possible for Nintendo to pull out the reticule for the video...though that's a bit bit reaching and probably not very likely.  I'm not saying they didn't do this, but considering we're making one leap here...the second is on shaky ground and doesn't help to support the first.
