This is not a rumor.
There isn't a source for this.
It's just me speculating.

I'm sure many of you Metroid afficionados have noticed in the trailer for this game that in the 2d sequence Samus fires into the background. Anyone care to wager a couple scenerios on the control method you would use to make this happen. I would hope that holding down and shooting puts Samus into some sort of a crouch/shooting position...and that up and shoot would have her firing skyward. So unless they plan on having you hold a separate button to aim into the background (which seems like overkill) something else is definitely going on.
I believe it's possible that Sakamoto/Team Ninja might be using the IR on the wii remote to pull this off, especially as both Sakamoto and Yosuke Hayashi have went on record stating that one of the goals in creating this new Metroid is to make the game more accessible, while retaining the Metroid feel.
The only problem I have with substantiating this is that there is no on screen reticule, which seems to put a pretty big hole in my theory. On the other hand, if you were to use the IR not in a one-to-one connection with samus, but rather in the traditional 8 points of aim found in Super Metroid as well as Zero Mission and Fusion it wouldn't be difficult to aim where you wanted without an onscreen compass.
Any thoughts? Is this possible? And what would you think of that as a control scheme?
