would access or no access to guns really change what happens? if he was honestly going to do what he did, whats to stop him from going into the kitchen and grab a knife? sure, a knife would've made it more difficult but the fact that he killed his mother and then tried to kill his father means that there was sufficient intent so that he was going to attempt to do it either way. i dont think gun control was the problem here, the problem was that this child (at the time, at least) had problems, and this sentence is just that, about keeping him of the streets.
now, if you want to argue that he'd be better placed in a mental institution for a couple of years as opposed to 23 years in jail is a different story, and probably the better option.
