It’s hard to believe, but prisons in the U.K. have perks beyond square meals, access to great fitness centers, and, of course, group showers. If you find yourself behind bars, don’t fret, you may have access to a PlayStation 3. That was, until authorities feared some inmates incarcerated at HMP Rye Hill prison in Rugby, Warwickshire were using the consoles to conduct crimes outside their cells and even plot escape attempts.
You read that correctly, not only are inmates given access to PS3s, they allegedly have the know-how to use the console’s wireless and Bluetooth connectivity to communicate directly with compatible devices held by others on the other side of the fence.
“PlayStation 3 consoles are barred on the grounds that they have the capability to send and receive radio signals as an integral part of the equipment,” explained a spokesman for the U.K. Prison Service.
You may recall news last month about a U.K. agency accusing gang bosses of running their empires from behind bars by using Internet games. The Serious Organized Crime Agency believed the criminals were using “PlayStations” to charge mobile phones smuggled into jail and they were playing games over the Internet, dishing out orders in-game.
Prison Services denied inmates are allowed access to any wireless device. Fine, but we are more interested in the fact prisoners were/are allowed access to PS3s. Video game consoles, especially the powerful PS3, are luxuries many people can’t afford. We still hear some of our readers haven’t purchased the $399 USD machine. While we won’t advocate crime, perhaps if you find yourself in a paddy wagon you’ll feel a bit of comfort knowing your gaming needs may be met.
