there's a difference when you can chose different bundles and when the only way to get ps3 is by buying uncharted bundle - don't you think? also i doubt Forza 2 bundle was available for longer than 3months while uncharted bundles sony was selling for bout a year or longer in different packages. probably at least 1mln uncharted sales were from bundles alone. |
Okay. Across holiday 2007, Microsoft offered Forza 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance for free with every pro or elite Xbox 360 sold in the US, and the same thing applied elsewhere, but not always MUA with Forza 2. Between the start of October 2007 and the end of December 2007 (I can't find the actual precise dates of the bundle), 2.5m Xboxes were sold, and just assuming that 1/3 of the people who bought the consoles got the arcade though the figure is likely lower, it means that at least 1.6m copies of Forza were sold in bundles in the US alone, it was certainly bundled in the UK as well over that christmas, but I am not sure about Europe
Just looking at the sales figures in the US for Forza 2. The game opened with sales of 200k, and then by week 10 it was selling 7,500. I know it was launched in May, but then you compare that to GT 5 Prologue in the US (it weakest region, though 2nd weakest in terms of raw sales) it opened with 145k, and was selling about 11k on week 10. So they are similar figures for the first 10 weeks, with Forza having a stronger open week, but if you look at the totals, GT 5 P has sold 0.66m in the US and F2 2.47m, now that does just not happen without bundling. This is most apparant if you take a look at a graph of its sales totals:

I don't know how to embed it, but if you click the link, you can see the graph levelling of at around the 1.2m mark WW. Now of course many of the extra sales would have come from the bundle, it is safe to assume that the period where it is much flatter after the middle section, which 800k, but it is far to say that around 2m of the sales for Forza 2 were from bundles
Now let's look at Uncharted. Now firstly, in the US, it was included in the premium 160gb hardware bundle, which would have counted for far less that 1/2 of the PS3's sales. According to amazon that bundle is still avaliable, and it only sold about 3k last week, so it is fair to say post-holiday, that bundle has not been around that much
However that bundle was not the same as the Forza bundle, the 160GB is so expensive comparitively few people would have bought it.
In Europe it was bundled, but many games are bundled are there are nearly always many options avaliable
Anyway, look at the sales of Uncharted : http://www.vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=All&game1=Uncharted%3A+Drakes+Fortune+-+PS3®2=All&game2=®3=All&game3=&weeks=100
You can see that it reached around 1.6m before the upward curve. The game clearly only sold about 600k with the bundle at the very most. Including those minor bundles in others, because the game has only sold about 960k in America, and 1.4m in others, so the more widespread America bundle can't really have represented more than 300k, and maybe another 300k, but it is definitely not in the same sort of regionas Forza 2
So, from the sales of 2.6m announced by Tretton at the press conference we can assume that at least 2m were sold without bundling
Oh, and Forza 2 is a Classic in the UK
And, I have done something that really screws stuff up, using a comma or sometimes a space puts the punctuation or space on the very far left..... I have done something weird, and that last full stop should be here.
