From what I've heard you have to press buttons in Grand Slam Tennis to do certain shots but in Vitua Tennis you just do it like in real life.

If that's true then getting Virtua Tennis should be a no-brainer, right?

I've seen that in a few places but I think that's wrong and I think there was a thread where NJ5 posted a quote from EA which showed that to be wrong.

I started on my first tourney at Bethpage Black (which for non-golf fans is notoriously one of the hardest courses in golf, especially for a public course), and eagled my first hole with an amazing chip in.  At that point I was like alright, im going to kick this game's ass, but then of course I hit hazard after hazard after hazard, and ended up 10 over par.  I am on the advanced swing mode, but I like it that way--I just definitley need some practice.

From your review, I assume that you're an actual golfer?  If so, how would you compare the controls to real golf?  They seem good to me, but my golf experience is limited to going to a driving range a couple times, so I really don't know if the game is asking us to unrealistically exaggerate twists, for example

Well, I actually play disc golf more in real life (because its far cheaper), but I am a big golf fan and do play whenever I get the chance.

In my opinion, the controls are as close as any mainstream video game has ever gotten.  There are expensive golf simulators that do better, but only if you want to schill out thousands of dollars.

As to exaggerating draws and fades, you can play some sick curves in the game that would just be a shank left or right if you tried forcing it like that in real life (unless you are an actual pro who can play a fade or draw).  Basically, it's still difficult, but not nearly as difficult as it would be in real life.  Does that answer your question?

Hmm, after reading that, I don't think I'll ever set the swing mode to advanced ever. :P

Hah, despite that review and how it sounds, I dont actually think it has an effect on your swing.  I think the only differences in Advanced Swing mode are that you dont get the drag and drop auto draw/fade option, nor can you spin in the air, nor do you get a putt preview.  Basically it takes most of the more arcadey elements out--I definitely disagree with that writer that its as hard or harder than real golf.  The tone of the rest of that review makes it sound like he was just used to kicking ass in the older dual analog versions of Tiger Woods.

In that sense I definitely know where he's coming from too, I used to be able to shoot consistantly 15-20 under par on PS2 versions Tiger Woods.  I doubt I'll ever shoot scores that good in this iteration.

Picked up Tiger Woods yesterday. The Frolf is worth the money alone. The last golf game I played was Mario Golf, but I just had to pick this up and it didn't disappoint. Not a huge golf fan, but this game is great. The golf is great and so is the frolf. Worth every penny. I don't see why anyone would buyit on any other console. Once you play with the Motion+, you'll never want to go back to a regular controller.

I think so, thanks!

I was mainly asking to get an idea of whether the game would be recommended for a golfer who never played video games, since its realism is already  beyond my ability to tell how accurate it is.

Updated with a couple more glowing Tiger Woods reviews. I really want to see more of Virtua Tennis. I'm starting to wonder if Sega doesn't have too much faith in the game...

It looked amazing from the point unveiled it.

New review out for GST on www.gamekult.com (a French website). They gave it a 5/10 which they qualify as "average". They had an issue with controls (they say you can do what you want 80% of the time but that means 20% is random...) and the depth of the game (ie not enough modes, courts, etc...).

Wait, the X-Play review said something about competing against the pros with updated on weather and stuff. Do they mean when the pros are having a PGA tour or something, you play at the same course against the same shots they made?

Yup.  Although sponsors prevent some of the tournaments from being in the game (the masters at Augusta being the most glaring ommission) you will be able to play against the pro's scores at tournaments they're in on any given week.  Its especially awesome because you'll be able to play against their live scores on the same course in the same weather conditions.

Starting next Thursday they'll be playing the US Open at Bethpage Black--I am going to be practicing a ton this weekend to compete against them there, Bethpage is a feggin hard course.
