I had seen the movie year ago when it first came out and remembered it being cool, so I figured I'd go ahead and get the blu-ray version with bonus footage and FFXIII preview.
Damn that movie sucks. It wasn't nearly as good as I remembered it. The action sequences are pretty cool, but the writing is so god-awful. "I got you a present cloud....shall I give you....despair?" I mean what the fuck is that? It doesn't even make sense. Or Sephiroth cuts a building in half and says "Down on your knees cloud, I want you to beg for forgiveness". Who wrote this? Within the context of what's going on on screen, or the story this makes no sense. All of the dialogue is C grade anime writing, stuff you expect to hear in filler episodes of Naruto or Dragon Ball Z. I can't believe that I enjoyed this movie at any point in the past, maybe I was drunk or something I don't know.
The animation isn't as good as I remember it either. The character models look really good, but the animation is often times awkward, or clearly incorrect. Especially when they are on motorcycles and it looks like they are floating sideways on the ground rather than actually having some kind of traction and rolling ontop of the ground. It looks like the models aren't interacting with the environment or each other properly, and looks very awkward.
But damn, Final Fantasy XIII looks spectacular. It's the first time I've seen it running on my HD TV and it looks astounding. I wish we had gotten a demo instead of just a video preview, but oh well. Maybe we'll get a downloadable through the PSN in the future. But my god that game looks gorgeous. The cutscenes looked better than advent children and the gameplay was only a marginal step down from the cut scenes. That game is beyond gorgeous. Hopefully the writing and acting will be better than advent children.
