Forums - Microsoft - Is Forza 2 proof that the 360\'s DVD format is finally falling behind?

"On Monday at E3, the firm announced that the Xbox will soon be able to host live streaming 1080p video on demand, in what the company called 'instant on' 1080p, thus seemingly replacing one of the main advantages that Blu-ray offers consumers; much more space for much more detail.

With key reasons to turn to Blu-ray extinguished, it is now likely that the Xbox 360 will forever remain tethered to its DVD-9 format. Just over a third of the way into Microsoft's promise of a ten year support cycle, size problems are not going to get smaller for the company."

Title and article quoted from maxconsole so don't flame me for either of em. I am the Ying to Gebx's Yang. And I never knew until now that Forza 3 would be shipping on two discs, that seems odd for a racing game .When will the disc changes take place ?

There's no disc changing. The second disc contains some cars and tracks, and is basically an installation disc.

I read somewhere it's two dual layer DVDs, which if true would suggest more than just some cars and track layouts.

Elsewhere it's claimed the game has higher quality textures, so I think that may be an important reason.

Is the no disc swapping comment from a developer?

Install disc? Do you suggest the game would require a harddrive? (it's not available by default for all 360s)

PS3 vs 360 sales

Exactly how does two discs in any way indicate that DVD9 is falling behind? We know that the extra charge for two discs Microsoft makes is not high (granted, it is for 3 or more), but for now all that this means is that the game will have an install, and will still have a higher maximum and average read speed than the PS3's Blu-Ray drive.

Didn't Gran Turismo 2 ship on 2 CDs?

So you think that the title and content of the article are flamebait ? It isn't.

Some games won't fit on a single DVD-9. That's not new. I actually bought my 360 due to my preference towards DVD format.

THE GOOD

Better loading times
Less expensive to end users
Less expensive to developers

THE BAD

Noisy drive
Eventual disc swapping / mandatory installs

God i hate fanboys, almost as much as they hate facts

Hmmmmmm....I have never experienced playing a racing game that come with 2 disc so I got no comment on it but hopefully It doesn't affect the quality of the game which is the most important part.

It's in the article cited in the OP.

Also, this is a dupe thread. The original discussion is here.

It probably is still much cheaper to users/developers to print multiple DVDs over a single Blu-Ray disc ...

If I wan't to get a DVD pressed the best price I can get is around $1 per disc, if I want to get a Blu-Ray disc pressed it is around $10 per disc. Certainly, the insanely high volumes a game company can get probably cuts the cost (to them) in half or quarter, and the cost reductions would be more dramatic for blu-ray (probably cut costs in half or quarter again), but (much like multiple CDs vs. DVDs until about 2005) its still probably far cheaper to print multiple DVDs than to print a single Blu-Ray disc.

Now, this doesn't mean that it is a big cost savings to developers or consumers though ...
