Forums - Nintendo - New Iwata interview: Talks about market strat, apple, and no wii hd

Respect.

Around the Network

I like this part:

"VB: Do you feel you need to stay ahead of Sony and Microsoft on motion control? They clearly seem to be trying to leapfrog the Wii’s capability. With Microsoft’s Project Natal and Sony’s new motion-sensing wand, doesn’t that force you to do a more accurate form of motion control?

SI: I don’t share that feeling. We don’t have any information about when they would introduce these things and at what kind of price. Until we know exactly what they will do, it’s harder to understand what we would need to do. What Nintendo has to do is make software that takes advantage of the Wii MotionPlus and make efforts to make the public understand the benefits of the Wii MotionPlus controls. As the pioneer of motion-sensing technology, what Nintendo has to do is provide new surprises in the next year and two years from now."

I wonder which games will Nintendo release using Motion Plus.... Zelda of course, but what else? Kid Icarus? F Zero with Motion Controls? hmmm..

VB: There are two areas of potential threats, or red ocean, that I want to ask about. There are an awful lot of free games out there. In the last year, more than ever.

SI: Because of this? [Shows off his iPhone]
This was the defining point of the interview, for me.

And what do you see in that action?  That Iwata understands and repects what Apple has accomplised, that Nintendo and Apple are secretly planning a merger, that he secretly considers it no competition (but is too polite to say so) or something else?

I enjoyed the interview, Iwata has done wonderful things for Nintendo, and things have only gotten better since he took over, IMO.

Because he's aware of potential threats and is not sitting on his laurels. That he's considered many different angles from which one can think about the position his company is in.

I agree that he's the best thing to happen to this company in a long time.

You know, I don't get the mass of negative response to the Vitality Sensor at all. Just think: what if horror games could literally adjust their output based on how fast your heart was racing? What if action games could adjust difficulty and make controls more forgiving when it's clear that your pulse is pounding so fast that you can barely hold the controller steady? What if an FPS played a heartbeat based on your own as you went along, heightening the intensity of firefights even more? How about a game where you have to keep your pulse not too fast and not too slow while working on some other task as well? And dozens of other possibilities come to mind as well. There's even the potential for entirely new genres based on the idea. I see a lot of potential here to turn what's currently a relatively passive and unconscious part of gaming into an integral part of the experience here.

Expect companies to start trying to replicate the Vitality Sensor, but if Nintendo showed it, must mean they already have something. Probably they have the games running already, but don't want to lose the momentum created by Wii Fit and Wii Sports, so they are saving it for next year's E3 along with Zelda. If by any chance any company announces something similar to the sensor, then Nintendo will immediately come out and show the vitality sensor with a close launch date. They have all holes covered, there's no taking them by surprise this gen. Great strategy.

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

If Zelda somehow incorporates the vitality sensor, I don't know what I'll do.

I think it would be cool to use the vitality sensor in games with enemies that can 'smell fear' or hear your heartbeat etc. So that the higher your heart rate get's the more enemies will find you. Would be interesting to try to play a game while also trying to keep your heart rate down. It opens up some interesting opportunities for sure, and again, it's completely out of left field and something no one else has been dreaming about.

Mr. Iwata knows more than wii can imagine about the videogaming industry that's why he is the chairman of the Big N.

Iwata is defiantly one of the best things to happen to Nintendo. He is just excellent.
