I'd love if the vitality sensor is a red herring. Something Nintendo has come up with to see if MS and Sony will follow suit, in the meanwhile they have no interest in it and are busy developing other technologies while people wonder what the hell the vitality sensor is actually for.

That's an expensive red herring.

Past Avatar picture!!!

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

It's not a red herring in the way you put it hsrob. What Nintendo have done and are about to do is genius. They've finally perfected their motion controller and now the competition are trying to catch up but think about it, people don't buy the Wii because of the motion control. They buy the system to play the games. What Nintendo are doing with the Vitality Sensor is taking the focus off of their own now perfected motion controls just as the competition tries to jump into the action.

It's classic New-Nintendo. They're once again going for that blue ocean, they're trying to get consumers thinking about new software, they're trying to put themselves out in front saying 'look ok, now you can get motion controlled games on the other platforms and that's fine, but you can't get our own software and you can't get new experience like this one!' *points to the new Wii Lifestyle game that comes with the Vitality Sensor*

Simply put, Wii has all the strong mainstream franchises in the casual space and now will have a near perfect motion controller a year before anyone else. That means Wii is solidified in that position. Next year Nintendo will then take the focus off that and onto new experiences. It's not about the hardware but the software. They know what they're doing and I'm sure Microsoft and Sony have no clue.

Also Rol is Austrian not Australian, we're not crazy like he is :P

I can imagine a game called Wii/We Truth or Dare. The Vitality Sensor is used as a primitive lie detector for Truths, and the standard controller for dares. Ubisoft should make it.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy

Yes.

Nintendo has the money to burn on useless and industry-degrading products, just like Microsoft and Sony.

Wait, what?

Try again.

Well to be honest it's just a pulse ox, nothing more from what they have said so it may not have cost them that much on the hardware development side.

But anyway, my tongue was very firmly in my cheek.

Guys, this is almost certainly a joke post ;)

...

Maybe WiiFit++ will support it. Or maybe its time for...

Heart Training!!

Play Tetris, by controlling the blocks through your pulse. Select pictures to look at, to vary your pulse - from peaceful, to grotesque scenes - to hardcore porn.

And the next hardware, will be the 'WiiWeeProbe'. Instant pregnancy checks - that is a $10bn/yr market right there!

Do all Australians share your (lack of) reason, or is it just you?

Think of Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen's gay Australian reporter. Clearly Australians are crazy.

You know i'm beginning to suspect that Rol isn't actually from Australia.  But yes, Australians are crazy.

That is nonsense, of course Rol is Australian. Where else can he possibly come from....Austria? Who lives over there? It is the middle of nowhere...=P

I think Starcraft would be very offended- he's from Austria! One of the mods is, as well.

And yes, Rol, you're right. In a couple of years, Microsoft will release a vitality sensor radiating device (no attachment needed!) and Sony will release a vitality sensor that measures how much you breathe.

EDIT: Wow. The Austrian mod is above me, and he isn't a mod anymore o.O

(Former) Lead Moderator and (Eternal) VGC Detective

It's not as good as Sony's tongue sensor. It does everything the vitality sensor does but also tracks your taste buds and can give you tastes and smells (with an attachment) all these things are really necessary for full immersion. They aren't just gimmicks that people will get really carried away with because they are unhappy with the current state of gaming excellence.
