Iwata said Nintendo will be ready to introduce the new hardware when developers say they can no longer improve games for the current Wii console.
This week, Microsoft Corp. introduced new gesture-based technology for the Xbox 360
dubbed Project Natal, while Sony Corp. unveiled a new motion controller for the Playstation 3.
Both are expected to compete directly against Nintendo's Wii
and Wii Remote technology.
Wii is the leader in console sales, moving more than 50 million units worldwide.
The motion-sensing hardware has become a mass market hit, with a low barrier-to-entry for game titles.
Nintendo this month will release the Wii MotionPlus, a peripheral that provides better motion-sensing accuracy to the Wii Remote.
New titles to utilize the device include Wii Sports Resort and EA Inc.'s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10.
New first-party titles to be released for Wii this year include New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Wii Fit Plus.
Third-party developers this week debuted a number of franchise titles to Wii at the E3 convetion in Los Angeles, including EA's Dead Space: Extraction and Capcom Co.'s Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.
