Nintendo working on new console to succeed Wii

Nintendo Co. President Satoru Iwata told Bloomberg this week that it is working on a new console.

Iwata said Nintendo will be ready to introduce the new hardware when developers say they can no longer improve games for the current Wii console.

This week, Microsoft Corp. introduced new gesture-based technology for the Xbox 360 dubbed Project Natal, while Sony Corp. unveiled a new motion controller for the Playstation 3.

Both are expected to compete directly against Nintendo's Wii and Wii Remote technology.

Wii is the leader in console sales, moving more than 50 million units worldwide.

The motion-sensing hardware has become a mass market hit, with a low barrier-to-entry for game titles.

Nintendo this month will release the Wii MotionPlus, a peripheral that provides better motion-sensing accuracy to the Wii Remote.

New titles to utilize the device include Wii Sports Resort and EA Inc.'s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10.

New first-party titles to be released for Wii this year include New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Wii Fit Plus.

Third-party developers this week debuted a number of franchise titles to Wii at the E3 convetion in Los Angeles, including EA's Dead Space: Extraction and Capcom Co.'s Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.

Back in 2000/2001 Nintendo claimed that they started work on their next generation consoles before they released their current generation console because of how long it took to develop a system from scratch.

This isn't exactly news. >_>

They won't release a new console until Wii sales slow down. As of right now they have no reason to release a new console for at least a couple more years.

Plus once sales slow down for the Wii they could easily drop the price to $199, probably even to $149 if it somehow got desperate.

Hey, big news, MS is working on neXtBox and Sony is working PS4!

Seriously, all three almost immediately start working on the next big thing in some form shortly after one is released.

Uhmm. Nintendo is always working on a new console, or a new Mario or a Zelda. The question is: when will it come?

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Wii HD.

ATi/IBM probably already have given Nintendo the chipset.

True, but there seems to be a lot less information this gen on what's going on. I am pretty sure as early as 2003 I was reading articles about chipsets and the like for this gen's consoles. While this gen articles like the OP seem to be the most I ever see.

I think Nintendo already has their next console finished hardware wise. They're probably just fiddling around with the controller and input stuff.

If the next machine is supposed to be PS3/360 level or a little more powerful (I doubt Nintendo would need more than that) ... ATi and IBM would have no problem with that type of a request.

i just like the fact that for every piece of equipment nintendo sells they get profit from it....

For sony they better bundle their dildo with the Ps3....ps3 cost too much already ;)
