Forums - Gaming - What does Nintendo have to do to please people?

I would also put stock in the "No Zelda" theory, too. Not as a way that Nintendo is at fault, but because gamers go into E3 with certain expectations from each company. They like to be surprised, but they like to get what they went in wanting to get, too. Sony and Microsoft delivered that: games that we knew about, but had few details on, like ODST, Uncharted 2, MAG, SC: Conviction, GT5, Forza 3, GTPSP, etc, etc. People got what they wanted out of this E3 from Sony and Microsoft

People went into this E3 expecting New Zelda and Pikmin 3, and got neither. The facts of the other games don't really matter. They might be nice, but they're not what they wanted.

Now, last year's conference was much worse, but in that conference again, expectations were denied. The rumors flew for Kid Icarus Wii, and they were denied, and so rage ensued.

That's what it is. In their E3 of surprises, Nintendo defied expectations, and so got smacked down.

The games Nintendo listed shot up my most wanted list fast, first probably being Golden Sun to be honest, and Galaxy 2 being a close second.  But anyone that is a gamer, went into E3 expecting Zelda should have been slapped in the face by that Metroid Other M announcement, and should be satisfied especially since Miyamoto did talk about it, gave a little info, and told them why it wasn't on demo, cause it would waste time and delay the game from getting to the gamers.

Nintendo trying to support the gamers +1

Wii Friend Code - 5882 9717 7391 0918 (PM me if you add me), PSN - MaxwellGT2000, XBL - BlkKniteCecil, MaxwellGT2000

They don't need to do anything.

The solution to this problem lies in the progression of competition in the industry. I could foresee months in advance that Nintendo would have a hard time this E3. You can see it in people's expectations, in 2004 most people were absolutely past looking at Nintendo closely. Because they weren't a market leader then, people came to accept things more quickly. Prior to this E3 however the sentiment was "they better", this can only lead one place no matter what is done.

If you think about 2004 the only thing that wowed gamers was Zelda. That was one game. If they were to do that today it would never work, gamers would look at the visuals, at the art style, at the design choices. Some of them would find it too similar to past Zeldas, others would find it too different. So there's no winning when you're in the "they better" position. Nintendo's negative momentum from last year wasn't the sinking feeling kind of 2003. I get the sense this year that(sinking feeling) was more prominent, because even though Nintendo announced the core games, people subconsciously or not, are coming to the realization that this is at base a small company.

Nintendo focused on making sure this is transparent, for instance Metroid Other M being handled by Team Ninja, and Miyamoto's remarks about Zelda. With the way expectations were a lot of people were imagining Zelda would be practically ready by now, this E3 is sort of like 2003. I'm not saying next year will be great, but in terms of the theme it's very much like 2003. It's a reality check for people looking up to Nintendo to lead in a resourceful way. Nintendo can't satisfy the collective consciousness without going through this period of level-headed disappointment.

Which by the way is not what happened last year. Last year it was anger, not disappointment. This year the mission will be to get expectations in line with what's realistically Nintendo's functions. People are being overserved(by other companies), yet instead of moving along they insist in demanding from Nintendo things they will not do. To become things they are not.

Another thing they could do, actually, is simply make the Wii HD.

I know you may find this a little pointless, you might think people will say "oh, they're late to the game".But do not believe that would be the case necessarily. Many people want HD content, and only HD content. Switching back and forth makes everything look both better and worse. And you can derive from that a lot of the separation we're seeing.

However I know Nintendo won't do this, so the real answer is they need another scape goat. The moment when the Wii was accepted was the moment the PS3 price was announced(along with Sixaxis in an arrogant fashion, which raised the likability factor for Nintendo). They need one of their competitors to screw up amazingly and in a way that relates to them. THIS would do it. I guarantee it.

But you cannot plan that can you? At least not Nintendo.

Answering the topic:

1 - Closer their ties with third-parties. Nintendo doesn't (actually, never) worked correctly with it's third-parties counterparts. Nintendo must change their philosophy that third-party games on their own system are direct competitors of it's first and second-party titles and a thread for them. Yes, that's the way Nintendo think and that's why third-parties are reluctant to work with. Nintendo should be more friendly toward them, just the way Sony and MS do. This'll bring more support and more sales.

2 - Expand their market. Nintendo is being conservative at best with it's franchises. Yes, they've created some new IPs, but very few were target toward it's old audience (not the casual which Nintendo is aiming). Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Music, Nintendogs and Brain Training public is completely different from Mario, Zelda and Metroid one. It's been a long, long time that Nintendo don't announce a new big budget IP. They should do what Sony is doing investing on new big budget IPs (Uncharted, Resistance, inFamous, The Last Guardian etc). New IPs would expand Nintendo audience and attract new players as well.

3 - Invest on genres they never done before. I would love to see a sandbox, FPS, stealth, FF-like RPG and a realistic racer made from Nintendo first-parties. That would be a bold and different move.

4 - Less greed. Nintendo should make better use of their extense amounts of money instead of using cheap and simple strategies just aiming easy money (Animal Crossing DS copy and paste for Wii for example). Unlike many says, it wouldn't a bad idea for Nintendo to acquire more first and second-parties to work with. It worked with Sony and Microsoft, why Nintendo should miss the boat?

1.-Nintendo right now has changed many of their 3d parties relationships..heck they changed it since the gamecube! that argument is very old and doesn't make sense now. what do you want them to do? make the games for them? Admit it, 3d parties had changed a lot, they have became more lazy and more detached from gamers, seeing themselves as the next stanley kubrick or the new andy warhol forgetting their true job:make games. Nitendo gaves them a cheap platfrom to develop and more liberties than before. And if you think that MS is better you are wrong. They charge more to the games companies make, had more expensive kits and they are more strict than Nintendo.

2.-AND WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY HAVE BEEN DOING SINCE THEIR LAUNCH?! Wii sports has extended the market like none other game has done in decades!!!!  are you that blind?!

3.-they would only use the genre they think the game fits not only because its cool.

4.-oh right because neither sony nor MS are greed right?

You are talking like what Nintendo is doing is perfect and flawless. You're wrong, amigo, very wrong. Let me get this straight:

1 - If Nintendo really changed, then explain me why so many third-parties are being so biased against Wii? EA and Ubisoft are the prime example of this. They're putting their major franchises on HD consoles and ignoring Wii's big user base. Where's Wii versions of Assassin's Creed 2, Modern Warfare 2, Dead Space 2, The Godfather 2 (considering how well praised the Wii version of the first game was)? Sometimes they say that Wii can't handle these games. But... haven't Ubisoft announced a Assassin's Creed version for PSP? EA announced Army of Two for PSP? Games that could easily been done on Wii. EA and Ubisoft are just examples, most third-parties are behaving this way. Oh, yes, you'll say Capcom for sure. If Capcom is so enthusiast of Wii, then why there's no Street Fighter 4, Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2 for Wii? If you are acknowleding with this, then you are lost in the dark. Period.

2 - Do you really believe Wii Sports was target toward the old Nintendo audience? You miss my point completely.

3 - Fine for you if like to play the same genres over and over again. Not everyone will agree with you.

4 - Like all major companies, they are. But Nintendo is being outrageous greedy. With the money they have, they could expand their internal developers to a number no other company in the world could follow. Nintendo have enough money to buy Sega, Capcom, Konami and Square Enix all at once if they want and still have large amounts remaining.

1. right, because ubisoft and capcom, major PS3 third parties, are the only 3rd parties worth knowing.

2. look up the word "expansion". dont put that word and "old audience" in the same sentence, its confusing.

now show me proof that nintendo's old audience is no longer loyal to them (no, you don't count), and that it's unhappy with the 20something franchises still active or being brought back to life since the old days. sony makes new IPs because it HAS to. its first party franchise list pales in comparison to nintendo's.

3. Nintendo covers: plenty of Racing, excessive Platformers, decent Action-Adventure, a few RPGs, a little FPS, some Music & Rhythm, bit of Fighting, Flying, Strategy, some Sports. Hmm. yea, i think ill be just fine playing these 10 genres (plus third party stuff) over and over again. theyre not going to do the games you are suggesting (hackslash, sandbox, bloody FPS) because they want to keep their image.

4. wow, so nintendo could just buy up billion dollar companies with hundred million dollar net income? didnt realize it worked that way. besides, third parties kind of have to agree to being bought out. as for nintendo being "outrageously greedy"... hm, we're looking at three companies... nintendo is a for-profit pure gaming company. sony is a media conglomerate that entered the games race only because they saw (from nintendo's experience) that it was a profitable market. and microsoft only entered so the other two wouldnt take away customers from their PC. nintendo looks like a kitten compared to these two.

god, why cant you just say "nintendo wont please me, because im a fanboy", and leave it at that, instead of making up reasons for not having a wii. you look stupid because your arguments have too many holes. and its not like youd get a wii anyway.

Around the Network

Nintendo pleases millions of people around the world... these people are not commenting on forums, these people do not run videogames blogs, and a large part of these people don't even know about E3...

On the net, you have a group of a few tens of thousands people, thinkin' they know what videogames HAVE to be... i call that group "the videogames ayatollahs", cos' they react exactly like any group of religious fanatics...

That group has tried for the last three years to put negative spin on Wii in every way possible, and the Wii's success has had only one result: more and more frustration, as their "point of view" has absolutely no impact on the "real world"...

That frustration will now express whenever they have an opportunity, making their claims even worse than ever before...

And you know what? The millions of people pleased with Nintendo's consoles don't care, because they will never read anything from that group of "hardcore integrists"... they just play, and maybe want some infos on the best available games, and that's it... all the rest is a futile battle, a "war" not worth figting for if you're a Nintendo lover...

I'm the kind of guy who reads gaming sites and gaming blogs, and sometimes, i want to answer to the most stupid comments i see, and God knows they are THE most stupid i've ever seen in my life... but everytime, i prefer to say to myself, "let these guys lose their time, and don't waste yours..."

So far, i'm glad the Wii had something totally different to offer: what would be the point of having three consoles with the exact same features and the exact same library? One console would then be enough, and it would make the development of games way easier for all the 3rd parties...

And to put is simply: without the wiimote, Sony and Microsoft would never had released any motion-based controls as well, so all the videogamers out there will benefit (once again) from the innovations introduced by Nintendo... they're the ones who took risks, and i think it's normal they now have success...

1. well, you certainly went out of your way to describe the PS3-pro third parties. aside from that, activision has not disputed a wii version of MW2

2. well, then show me proof that the old audience is unimpressed with what nintendo is doing.

3. star fox, F-zero, excitebike, and DK were on consoles last generation and this generation. theres no evidence nintendo tossed them away. aside from that, nintendo has revived punchout and rumoured kid icarus.

4. i also said nintendo isnt rich enough to buy out multi-billion dollar companies unless they go under (example: rare)

so do you. youre asking nintendo to do absolutely ridiculous things to please YOU. im happy with the way things are. and honestly, if you knew anything about nintendo, youd at least know theyll never go past a T rating just as disney wont do an R rated movie. and in case you havent noticed, we're all gamers here

I said it in a other thread before. If my nephew didn't wanted a Wii for Wii sports, SMG, Metroid why would he one for Wii sports resort, SMG 2, new metroid.

Nintendo did a good job to please their fans (except the Zelda lovers and pikmin 3 fans) but didn't announced a new game IP or a game from a franchise that is not on the Wii yet that the haters crowd wants.

Nintendo did a better job with the DS that is also why their is a lot less hate against the DS than the Wii.
