Forums - Nintendo - after 2 and 1/2 years, why all the Wii hate still?

The truth is that Nintendo does win.

Look at the sales. Look at the profits.

However, the people who are most likely to comment on video games -- males 18-34 -- is the exact demographic that the PS3 and Xbox 360 go after most while Nintendo treats is equally to virtually every other demographic.

Thus, your Internet posters, your TV commentators on G4, your sales clerks at Gamestop and Best Buy, all feel much more drawn to the PS3 and Xbox 360 than they do the Wii. After all, there are games on the Wii for children and seniors and females -- to the males 18-34, such software is a waste of resources that could better go into developing more FPS and TPS and AcAd (action adventure) games.

Thus, Nintendo gets the hate. But they are on track to get the normal amount of games purchased per system during a lifetime -- 8 to 12. Which is remarkable given that so many people seem to report that they are only in nursing homes or closets. (Its current attach rate is also roughly equivalent to the PS3 but behind the Xbox 360 which is a software monster. It should be noted that the PS3 has similar issues of people buying it for limited gaming because its Bluray capabilities. But since this is a high end technology, the males 18-34 see it as cool).

In closing, Nintendo can do no right in the eyes of certain people -- males 18-34, a certain stock analyst, a few technology magazine critics, etc. But it does a lot right in the arena where it most counts, which is why it has survived for so long.

If Nintendo is doing so much wrong, why are Microsoft and Sony trying to add motion. And before someone says it is an option, Microsoft wants to make Halo playable with its motion, which is much farther than Nintendo dares to go.

The 360 is not actually the software monster that it seems to be.  Owners of the 360 have actually purchased new software at a slower rate than owners of the PS3 or Wii.  It is just the extra year head start that makes the 360 look like a software monster.

I have a much more detailed discussion of this here: http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=66975

2010, it going to show the different emotions gamers (if you call them that) have.

It's like a music video where the Nintendo boys come down a post rain city alley way clicking their fingers one hand in pocket leaning over forward and walking with intent toward another group of HD boys doing the same thing... Ok that had nothing to do with anything, but that's just how I've viewed these console war things since I don't have a clue when.

Edit - and greased hair as well as biker jackets, lots of grease.

I can understand people being hostile towards Wii and Nintendo, but it really baffles me when companies like THQ spill utter nonsense and insults about the platform and its fanbase.

I don't know if it was the same guy, but 2 people from THQ were badmouthing the Wii. This guy said it was a nightmare, and the one before him said that he'd make more minigames if Deadly Creatures failed (which it did, would've on any console).

Once again, the minigame cash-in hasn't worked either, since Big Family Games (I didn't make that up, THQ just came out with that) only sold 6k first week. Unless it grows Godzilla legs, it would just be proof that not all that glitters minigame is instant gold.

THQ should know better than to let people like this speak for their company because it looks extrememly unprofessional. I know it doesn't reflect the views of everyone at THQ, but when you are in a Position of Power, everything you do reflects the sentiments of your company/faction/party/ etc,.

Simple. It doesn't do HD and people get all excited over shiny objects that they miss the substance behind the object.

that's why all the 'mature' teen gamers have to have ps360's and wii sucks and wii this / that ps360 is da bomb etc. Too focused on tech and shininess and less focused on content.

Don't even care to know about the mass of great Wii games existing and coming.

yeah clearly no HD games have substance

bad grfx = game has substance

good grfx = game's substance-less

seriously, what a terrible post superchunk (I hope you were sarcastic), the reason wii gets hate is that it doesn't get the "big" western 3rd party games that PS360 owners love......when it does the hate will end.

______________

but for people who love their core franchises....this year nintendo's E3 was fabulous, in fact it tied with SONY's for me.

Exactly my thoughts; you cannot outright insult and bash the people and demographic you plead to for their money. If the market doesn't react to your product, while it reacts on other products (reacting would be an understatement in case of SSBB, MKWii, etc), maybe it's not the market's fault, rather your own.

Even I have to Admit, After Nintendos E3, Hate against the Wii is Un-Just.

And i hated the damn thing with a passion.

But... Another M... :P

I'm going to totally disregard you first statement (not to mention the games) but that is really what bugs me about the wii.

I'll start by saying Mario, Zelda, Metroid are amazing, and the motion controls are really fun (played wii sports once).

With that said, 80% of the games on the wii are shovelware it seems. It bothers me that a system with so many lousy games sells so much better than the PS3 which has a lot more choices, mainly because of price and the attention its gotten (ie, ophrah/Ellen Degeneris).

Other than that I'm just biased because I don't own a Wii. There, I admitted it.

You wanna know the reason? It's not easy to create a great games using motion control. Here I'm talking about games that gamers love, immersive, epic, story driven, etc, I mean hell developers sometimes mess up traditional controls for games. So why not just come up with a simple shovelware game that uses generic waggle controls that will net you some cash that you can then use to develop games you really want to develop?

There is no reason they cannot use GC/Classic controllers.

I'm just curious, but can you name a single game that has done this? There probably has to at least be one, since I know its possible, but I also have a feeling that its frowned on my nintendo, it's called the classic controller for a reason.

Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 lets you use the GC controller. Super Smash Brothers Brawl lets you use the GC.

Let's put it this way: Is the PS3 worse off because it uses the DualShock 3? No. So why is it a problem if a Wii game does not use motion control?

No i'm saying the reverse.  The Wii is worse off most of the time, for me as an avid gamer, because of when it uses motion controller.  I'll have to try Zelda again, this time with the classic controller.  At least then i'll be able to play the games I do like without the pain of bad motion controls.

ya know what. i agree with you on that. i bought a wii before i got my 360. at first i was disappointed with the wii and felt it got old after awhile but when i look back on it, it is actually a good console. i only have five games for it but after this e3, i think i'm going to get at least two more wii games without a doubt. i still want to buy mario kart wii also and i need to beat no more heroes. i was blinded by the supposed hardcore gaming community that the wii sucks but now i can see that it is just as good as anything else out there. here's to hoping that nintendo will one day get back the respect it obviously deserves.
