Forums - Gaming - More Gamespot Bias

Personally, I don't have any preference one way or another to any of the consoles. But, honestly, Gamespot *does* seem to have a bias towards Nintendo

Latest Evidence?

Halo 3 (which has been pretty incredible so far) gets a 9.5, and is credited with "brining the series in exciting new directions" among other things in gamespot's review.

 Metroid Prime 3, in it's 8.5 review, is several times criticized for being a repetitive, similar game in the same vein of the first two MP's.

Now, call me crazy. Halo 3 is basically an adrenaline pumped Halo 2 with nice new features. Halo in itself is just one of millions of FPS's.

Metroid Prime 3  features an entirely new control scheme, not only new to the series, but like nothing else before it. The gameplay has changed in just as many (if not more ways) than Halo 3. Further, it is only the THIRD game of its kind, technically----as opposed to the ocean of generic Halo-esque FPS.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not even saying Metroid Prime 3 is better than Halo 3 (reserving judgment until I finish the campaign at least.) My point is that: could it be any clearer that Gamespot is biased towards Nintendo (or at least the Wii)?

Although I believe that 8.5 for Metroid is a little harsh - 9.5 for Halo seems about right. The extra 1.0 score for online, forge, recordings & next-gen gfx (etc..) wouldn't surprise me.

Halo 3 probably does innovate more than the MP3 does?

I think you meant biased against, as far as I know saying "bias towards" means the opposite of how you are using it. Of course I'm not exactly a professor or anything so I could be off on this one.

Anyways on the topic at hand, this discrepancy is probably due to different people writing the review and thus different standards being applied. I don't know that it represents a hidden agenda or purposeful effort to give lower scores or anything. But I do agree that Metroid was bashed over this where as Halo 3 is essentially celebrated for it. My take is that either the first games in the series were good so being similar is a good thing or the first games in the series were bad and its a bad thing. But apparently some see it differently. You will have to ask them for their take on this to understand why.

That's your proof of bias? Goodness me. Try harder next time.

I do believe he said "Latest evidence", implying he feels there is more to it than just this example. Perhaps we should ask him for more examples before we write him off?

@blaydcor

To me you appear to be showing bias yourself.  Are you going to play Halo 3's 4 player co-op, it's online, forge, saved film (you can view the action from any angle (from a character's perspective or a free roaming camera, slow it down, play it in reverse, you can even edit them by cutting out parts, and you can take still pictures, plus you can share all this with other Halo players), look at it's file share in which you can upload pictures or videos or download ones from other players (and even leave comments on them) and they're all hosted from a central server at Bungie.  I mean there's a lot of pretty amazing new stuff so to just call it Halo 2 is very unfair and it has a lot of stuff that is likely going to become standard and copied by other FPS.  It also has built-in clan support (not sure if it shows up on Xbox Live yet but it was created with Halo 3 in mind and will be included with future online fps games if their developers want it).  It's far more than just Halo 2 with a few nice features.

 yes, because when i idly  post something to ponder on out of boredom, i like to carefully collect evidence, develop a thesis, and then write an essay on the subject.

@sqrl

bias can be negative or positive. so they could be "biased towards" nintendo in a negative fashion

Play both games campaigns, play Halo 3's online, etc, and then come back and tell us if you feel there's bias.

 I'm not claiming that Halo does not deserve a higher score. I'm simply pointing out that the specific comments I quoted somewhat contradict if each other if Gamespot was truly unbiased.

There is nothing bias about either review. 1up gave MP3 a 9.0 and Halo 3 a perfect 10. Are they bias as well?

Just because you don't agree with a particiluar opinion doesn't implicate that their is a bias or favoritism at work. I agree that Gamespot can be all over the place with their reviews because they have given some poor Wii games (IMO) high scores while giving better games lower scores.

I think we should wait and see their comments on Galaxy and Brawl before jumping on the bias bandwagon though. Especially when the evidence is as poor as the one shown in this thread.

like i said, i'm not trying to win a court case to convict Gamespot of being biased. Idle speculation. No need get all riled up. And I'm not commenting on the *scores*. Simply that Halo 3 is hailed as being innovative, while MP3 is criticized for feeling old.

 Another (when all is said and done) FPS

vs.

The Third 3d Metroid with all new controls.

Not making any claims as to which is the better game, simply that Gamespot comes out a little biased. (Or maybe simply they have "Halo fever" like 50% of the gaming world does right now.)
