I think you meant biased against, as far as I know saying "bias towards" means the opposite of how you are using it. Of course I'm not exactly a professor or anything so I could be off on this one.
Anyways on the topic at hand, this discrepancy is probably due to different people writing the review and thus different standards being applied. I don't know that it represents a hidden agenda or purposeful effort to give lower scores or anything. But I do agree that Metroid was bashed over this where as Halo 3 is essentially celebrated for it. My take is that either the first games in the series were good so being similar is a good thing or the first games in the series were bad and its a bad thing. But apparently some see it differently. You will have to ask them for their take on this to understand why.
