Forums - Sony - This is going to be a club swung.

Do a little more research and you'll learn Epic stated long ago the X360 wasn't going to have some of the PC maps. Now they just pointed out the PS3 will have the same missing maps due to 'limitations of the consoles'.

And yes, the reason for the limitation was the same....lack of RAM. I didn't say the PS3 and X360 had the same specs, that's ridiculous.

How do you know it's the same maps missing? How do you know the 360 version won't have a few more maps than the PS3 version?

And you did say that "both have the same memory limitation vs PC's".

Yes, the same memory limitation as in not enough of it vs PC.

Wow, if the PS3 and 360 are limited for this game, imagine how much they'd have to kill it on Wii.....

Why are people bringing up the ps3's RAM and other stuff? It's a console that's almost a year old, so of COURSE it's not going to be able to run stuff tailored to the latest high-end PC hardware. I would've been very surprised if the ps3 version of UT3 was identical to the PC version. The fact that it's not should've been expected by all of you. The surprise and astonishment at this announcement makes no sense whatsoever.

Let me introduce you to something about forums - people discuss things! The potential reasons for the differences were not stated in the article, so it's not surprising that people will discuss them.

C'mon.  It's like asking why C&C3 looked better on the PC than it did on the 360.  Because it's a PC game being ported to less powerful hardware?  Remember Oblivion?  Doom 3?  Far Cry?  PC > Consoles, always.

I've done a little research:

- 360's OS takes up 32 MB of memory (6.25% of the memory). That leaves 480 MB for developers to split as they like between graphical and regular RAM. Meaning that if you split it equally, you have 240 MB for each use.

- PS3's OS (in the latest firmware update) takes up 48 MB of main memory (18.75%) and 24 MB of graphical memory (9.375%). That leaves 208 MB of RAM and 232 MB of graphical memory for developers.

Thanks for that, I had no idea about the actual breakdown of memory used between VRAM + main memory.

I also read that the PS3 will use a lot more system RAM when the game uses extra OS components - such as on-screen keyboard, voice chat, etc...?

So it could be higher for this game. Where as the 360 is fixed at 32MB for all games, all time.

...

Have to say, I do like the (idea of the) 360 architecture. Have a game with heaps of textures - just spend 350MB on textures. On the PS3, you'll need to store some in main memory and write a texture manager (copying them to VRAM as required) - or just use lower resolution textures. It is of course a trade-off with lower performance.
