Forums - Sony - This is going to be a club swung.

Here is a relevant article though I do not believe this is the one that jolt is citing.

The ps3 is hard to program for? Yes. But according to developers the ps2 was even harder. Look at what happened to the graphics. From ps1 looking games, to god of war 2(which looks as good as some xbox 360 titles).

It is all about money. If the ps3 were leading right now, GTA 4 released in october, MGS4 released November. FF XIII released december, and KH3 announced alreadt for the ps3.

But naw, it had to be sony's idoit plan, people dont and never will pay half a thousand dollars for video games.

Where did you see developers claiming that the PS2 was harder to program for than the PS3? I'd like to read that.

I have to say I admire Epics vision as a company. They probably just bit off more than they could chew. There are really no limits on the PC though most people's computers won't be able to handle this game anyways. I've always thought console games run smoother than their PC counterparts. A PC gaming rig is just so damn expensive these days. The only thing I play on my PC is DotA.

The reason developers put up with the PS2's programming difficulties was because the PS2 was a cash cow. There was so much profit to be had you in the system programmers couldn't ignore its shortcomings.

What Epic is saying:

Cost to learn PS3's programming tricks > Profit made on UT3 for the PS3

EDIT: Thanks for the correction.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

/facepalm

...let's not bring up the old "Gaming PCs are so damn expensive" argument again. It's very hard to put a value on a gaming PC, because they're not just gaming PCs. Every dollar put into a better rig makes it a better PC for EVERYTHING. Storage for music, movies...processor power and RAM for better browsing, streaming, multitasking, etc. And a rig to play Unreal on high quality wouldn't cost you more than $1000.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

The issue is RAM people. Epic is developing some multiplayer maps that require too much RAM to run smoothly on a PS3.

The average gaming PC has 1 GB or more of main RAM and 256 MB or more of video RAM. If Epic is working on maps to those specs, they won't run very well on the PS3 which has just 256 MB of main RAM and 256 MB of video RAM.

My own PC has 4 GB of main RAM and 512 MB of video RAM so I can easily see why some maps being catered to PC's like mine just won't run on a PS3 smoothly.

What Viper1 said, PS3 has little RAM... and when you put it on a crappy 128-bit bus width, it just worsens the problem.

Off-topic: Hey Viper1, isn't it great when you can get 4GB of RAM for under $150? For me it tastes just like victory.

Mine wasn't that cheap, though I could have bought 4 GB for about that.

Dedicated console gamers love to knock the price of upgrade for PC's but I see that as simply being gamer choice. We dictate what our machines can do so that we're not locked down to the same spec for 5-6 years.

Bus is another good point. Many cards now have 256 bit or 512 bit busses.
