Forums - Sales - My theory on why Wii sales have dropped

I was at my local Best Buy the other day and to my surprise I found several Wii consoles in stock. I thought the Wii seemed to not be in high demand as it used to be. But I found out they were bundling the Wii with other games, controllers , and  accessories (useless in my opinion). The cheapest bundle of the three they had was being sold at around $420.

Could this be the reason why Wii sales have dropped in the US? It could be part of the reason. I know when I bought the Wii at Fry's it was bundled with Wii Play and Zelda. The cost came up to about $350. I just wanted to buy the Wii without the extra stuff at $250. I wanted a Wii so badly I  bought it anyways. If it was more than $400 of bundled stuff I don't think I would have bought it.

It's obvious retailers know that demand is high and supply is low so they are going to take advantage to bundle it with extra stuff to make more money. But I also think it is putting some people off from buying it.

Outside of Japan, Wii sales haven't dropped.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

My theory on why Wii sales have dropped (on Japan):

- No great games
- Specific period of the year

I have a picture for proof, but my stupid cell phone cant connect with my pc. They arent bundling the wii's around my area in miami. There have been ALOT of wii's sold in best buy around my house. They got like 100 units in stock or sometin and sold around 80 the first day I was there. Now its been tracking down in the demand. When I bought heavenly sword, they had around 15 boxes of wii's for $249.99. '

Off topic: The funny thing is, they are getting the plastic boxs that protect games from being stolen of the ps3 games. Puting the ps3 games in the other side of the store, And using them for halo 3.  they took all the ps3's out and put papers saying they are "sold out". (I dont belieeve that $hit). then you see loads of boxes of xbox 360 elites and pro consoles on the side of the paper.

That exact thing happened last year in Canada except they gave the Wii the smallest spot in the store and pushed the 360 bundles into the Gamecube and Wii's area.  Little did they know eh?  Judging by this... the 360 Halo thing will be a huge flop and people will actually be in the store wanting PS3's..  Ok Halo won't be a flop but it might not get the system sales people expect.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

Still sold out in my area. I was at an EB games and Gamespot in Nashville TN (oprymills) saturday, neither had any. And yesterday i was at a wal-mart, a target, and Bestbuy (why is lilo and stitch such a damn hard movie to find???) here in Kentucky and none of them had any in stock either. That's why anecdotal evidence doesn't count for much.

Though the bestbuy is REALLY pushing the PS3 hard here. Multiple 5 foot stacks of PS3s as soon as you walk in the door with Heavenly Sword and the like next to them. Then behind all that a table with Halo 3 limited edition stuff (controllers, action figures, ect). At first I was like "jeese, they don't even want you to buy a wii." Because there was nothing about it up front, but then I realized they just didn't have any.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

Ohh they have wii's go to the middle of the store. The fron of the store has the ps3 games, but to the left side where you normally dont walk by.

Basicly they do not want to sell the ps3 any more. This is bad news HUGE bad news for sony, im sendin them an email to acknowledge this.

They're abundant here in Norway, from launch until now.
It's amazing how well the Wii has done, given that it has very few good games! Kudos to Ninty for a successfull launch and good sales, but I fear it won't last.

I may be crazy but ...

  1. We're (roughly) 2 Weeks away from the mid year fiscal report for Nintendo and they're (by our accounting) 320,000 units shy of 12 Million units sold; it is likely that they want to announce that they have sold 12 Million units worldwide in this report. At the current rate of sales they will 'just' make it.
  2. Nintendo has announced that they will have unprecidented availability of systems for Christmas which would imply that they were planning on (dramatically) increasing supply for Q3 of this year.
  3. It is likely that Nintendo would have to lower production in the short term in order to ramp up production to the next level.

When you consider all of that it is possible that in August (when Nintendo passed the 12 Million unit produced mark) Nintendo began their needed facilities upgrades in order to increase Wii production to 2 (or 2.5) Million consoles per month. This meant that Nintendo had to ration their systems for the remainder of the fiscal period and divert them to the regions which needed supply the most.

If I'm correct we will see in a couple of weeks Nintendo announce their sales for the past half year and their projections for the remainder of the year; my expectation will be 12 Million systems sold LTD with 9 Million more to be sold by March 31st 2008.
