The "vaccum cleaner" option is only available in the 40GB model and newer models, so rest easy you won't find it on your old 60GB PS3. Also, 60GB PS3 run a LOT HOTTER than the newer models so they're quite a lot more likely to have hardware problems, If I were you had bought a newer model after the first one died on me. Just a piece of advice, keep it well ventilated and don't abuse it. That model was discontinued less than a year of being out, and I don't think the only reason was to cut costs if you know what I mean....

Does that mean that it is perfectly safe?

Lol 60GB > Others. 80GB is the best for PS3 gaming, which is all you should need from that console if we're not talking multimedia stuff.

I just cover mine with a cloth 30 mins after I turn it off.

I'm sure it was the only reason. Had Sony not lover the price of the PS3 then, now the PS3 would really be dead.

Laying down...

Mine is laying down. Was standing up at the beginning, but I heard that it runs cooler if laying down. But I don't know which is correct.

Use compressed air and a vacuum. That is your safest and best bet for cleaning it out without damaging it.

My PS3 is lying down, as you can see http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=74273 but I really don't think it makes much of a difference from a cooling standpoint so long as you keep it well ventilated.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Laying of course. Standing is bad position for optical drives, HDDs and certain types of cheaper fans (and i bet ps3 doesn't come with quality expensive fan)

I would have thought that having it standing would be cooler as you have a larger surface free for the heat to escape. I keep mine lying down as if I have it standing I'm scared my cats will just knock it over... constantly.

As far cleaning is concerned I just it every week and vacuum it from time to time. If I hear the fans whirling loudly I get a magazine and manually fan the air around the console, lol.
